Vikings Falcons Betting – Falcons Soar Over Shorthanded Vikings
Minnesota wouldn’t have been a sports betting favorite coming into their road game in Atlanta anyway, but the Vikings definitely won’t be favored without their best player and the Falcons will take full advantage of this as they keep pace in the NFC South.

Pick: Atlanta Falcons -9.5
Why Bet On Minnesota Vikings (2-8 SU, 4-5-1 ATS)
The Vikings lost in more ways than one in a 27-21 loss at home to Oakland, and Christian Ponder was all over the place: 19-of-33 for 211 yards, two touchdowns, three picks and 71 yards on five carries. Both of his touchdowns came in the fourth quarter, and there are signs of encouragement from the former Florida State player, but his progress may hit a speed bump (more on that soon). Percy Harvin had six catches for 73 yards and a score, but the Minnesota offense made far too many mistakes with turnovers: you can’t commit five turnovers and expect to win a football game. The Vikings were even handed seven first downs due to penalties from an undisciplined Oakland team, and that probably helped them out a lot, but it still wasn’t enough. The defense allowed 162 yards on the ground and that allowed the Raiders to hold onto the ball for over 35 minutes, which limited Minnesota’s chances to come back.
But the story of this game was the loss of running back Adrian Peterson (ankle), who ran just six times for 26 yards and a score before spraining his ankle and he’ll be out for at least this game, although some reports are saying 4-6 weeks. Without Peterson in the lineup, the Raiders sacked Ponder five times and now Minnesota has to go with Toby Gerhart, although Harvin will get some touches out of the backfield as well. Tight ends Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring) and Kyle Rudolph (quadriceps) are questionable, but will likely play for the Vikings this week, but going into this game without Peterson puts a lot of pressure on Ponder.
Why Bet On Atlanta Falcons (6-4 SU, 4-5-1 ATS)
The Falcons jumped out to a 13-0 lead and held on for a 23-17 victory at home over Tennessee, and they took advantage of penalties by the Titans, who moved the chains for Atlanta five times. Matt Ryan was 22-of-32 for 316 yards and a touchdown, while Michael Turner ran for 100 yards and a score for the Falcons, although he also had a fumble on the day. Roddy White broke out for 147 yards on seven catches and the Falcons need him to play up to his potential to boost their NFL betting odds; we know what White can do, but it’s almost as if he has taken a back seat in the Falcons’ offense when he is their best weapon. The defense allowed 298 yards, including a measly 41 on the ground and they’ve been stingy as of late when it comes to rushing yards. They also allowed Jake Locker to come on and throw two second-half touchdowns, and the Falcons need to maintain concentration for 60 minutes if they’re going to move up the ladder.
Receiver Julio Jones (hamstring) is still ailing and he says he has no idea if he’ll be available to play this week, although the Falcons have enough weapons without him. Ryan was trying to fit the talented rookie into the system and White may have suffered the most because of it; Ryan looks more comfortable as of late, although they’ll have to work with Jones, who is going to be a star in this league. The Falcons trail New Orleans by a game in the NFC South and they know they can’t afford to slip up and let the Saints get away from them as we head down the stretch.
How It Will Play Out
Atlanta is a 9.5-point NFL betting favorite at home in this NFC contest, but they’re 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS in their last five at home against the Vikings since 1991 with four games coming in under the posted total. The Falcons are only 2-3 ATS in their last five games in which they were favored by 8.5 points, but they have a good chance to cover this week.
Gerhart had a good game last year when Peterson was injured, but he’ll need a huge game against the Falcons, who are going to stack up against the run and dare Ponder to beat them. The defense has to hold up, but the Falcons are going to pound them on the ground with Turner and then go over the top with their potentially deadly passing game. Ponder still has a few things to learn, while we still haven’t seen the Falcons play their best game, but they’re getting closer. Wager on Atlanta to cover the online betting spread.
