The NHL playoffs are here, and the toughest first-round matchup in the Eastern Conference pits the heralded Pittsburgh Penguins against the up-and-coming Tampa Bay Lightning.

(8) New York Rangers vs. (1) Washington Capitals – Capitals lead series, 2-1

The sports betting world still likes the Capitals to win this series, but the Rangers are now in the conversation after an eventful 3-2 win on Sunday in New York. The eighth seed took Game 3 from the top-seeded Capitals thanks to a pair of highly unlikely goals. The Rangers’ first goal came on a shot from a severe angle, about a 10-degree angle, from the right side of the goal. After Washington tied and then re-tied the game to create a 2-2 stalemate, New York’s Brandon Dubinsky was credited with a goal on a shot that caromed off the glove of Caps goalie Michal Neuvirth and fluttered in the air, landing just behind Neuvirth and then trickling over the goal line with 1:39 left in regulation. New York can’t count on more fluke goals, but it got the win it needed to stay in the series. We’ll see what Washington delivers in Game 4.

(5) Tampa Bay Lightning vs. (4) Pittsburgh Penguins – Series tied, 1-1

MLB baseball betting experts know that Tampa’s baseball team can’t score. In Game 2 of this series, the Lightning scored more than the Rays generally do.
In Game 1, Pittsburgh netminder Marc Andre Fleury withstood every flurry by the Lightning, stopping all 32 shots he faced in a spectacular performance that carried the Pens to a 3-0 win. Friday in Game 2, Fleury played differently. The Penguins lost because Fleury let in five goals on 21 shots. As good as he was on Wednesday, Fleury failed two nights later. Tampa Bay came rushing back to land a decisive counterpunch in Pittsburgh.
Game 2 got away from Pittsburgh early, and never got on track. Tampa Bay posted two goals in the first seven minutes, with Vincent Lecavalier touching twine on a power play. When Nate Thompson added a goal at 17:02 of the first, the Lightning grabbed a 3-0 lead and a full-on stranglehold.

(6) Montreal Canadiens vs. (3) Boston Bruins – Canadiens lead series, 2-0

The big question NHL betting gurus had before this series started was if Boston could shrug off the haunting memory of blowing a 3-0 series last year to the Philadelphia Flyers. Would the Bruins play with renewed intensity or shrivel? We’ve found out pretty quickly.

What went amiss for the Bruins on Saturday night? Try the fact that they were unprepared. Montreal’s Mike Cammalleri scored 43 seconds into the first period, and the Canadiens took a 2-0 lead under two minutes later when Mathieu Darche registered a power-play goal. Boston netminder Tim Thomas needed to play big, but he instead became leaky. It’s true that the Bruins scored only once on Montreal’s confident goaltender, Carey Price, but with the Habs owning a 2-1 lead in the second period, Thomas conceded a fat rebound on a medium-pace shot from the right face-off circle. Montreal’s Yannick Weber tucked the puck into the goal to give the Canadiens a 3-1 lead and stop the Bruins’ momentum. When Montreal cancelled out Boston’s one goal of the night, the home team’s confidence cratered. The Habs are in complete control of the series with Games 3 and 4 ticketed for Montreal this week.

(7) Buffalo Sabres vs. (2) Philadelphia Flyers – Series tied, 1-1

Ryan Miller, the outstanding netminder for the silver-medalist American hockey team in the 2010 Winter Olympics, has carried Buffalo on his back the past few seasons, and when the Sabres lose, it’s very rarely because of Number 30 between the pipes. On Saturday, in Game 2 of this series, Buffalo did commit 13 penalties, but Miller allowed five goals on just 34 Philadelphia shots. The Flyers created traffic in front of the net and screened several shots, but Miller didn’t make adjustments. His teammates didn’t help him, but Miller didn’t bring his A-game to the ice rink. Buffalo did miss a big chance to take a two-game lead, but the Sabres think that their goalie won’t look this bad for the rest of the series.
