Bet On NHL Playoffs 2011 – Canadiens On The Ropes As The Series Shifts Back To Montreal On Tuesday

How quickly things can change in a National Hockey League playoff series. A week ago the Montreal Canadiens were on a plane back to the Bell Centre with a two-games-to-none series lead after clinching the first two wins in their best-of-seven series against the Boston Bruins on the road. Seven days later the Canadiens will take to the ice at home for a third in the series, but under completely different circumstances. Montreal failed to earn a win at home through their first two chances, and after a 2-1 loss on Saturday in double overtime, they will skate in Tuesday’s game six looking to avoid elimination in the days leading up to the Kentucky derby betting.

The Canadiens looked dominant through the first two online sports betting games of the series as they combined for a 5-1 edge in goals including a 2-0 shutout win in the opener. Goaltender Carey Price outshined counterpart Tim Thomas in the Bruins’ goal, and it seemed as though a speedier Montreal team had the edge in terms of their game plan. Boston found itself struggling to get through the neutral zone and establish a puck presence in the offensive zone, and when they did Price was right there to make the key save.

However, with a chance to push Boston to the brink of elimination at home in game three the Canadiens made the biggest mistake of the series. Montreal came out flat and conceded three straight goals in an eventual 4-2 loss, a defeat that Price argued was the result of a lack of intensity leading up to the game. The Canadiens had fooled around somewhat in their morning skate, and didn’t take the opportunity seriously when they had the chance to step on the Bruins’ throats. Montreal responded in game four with a more concentrated effort to take a 3-1 second period lead in the contest, but Boston held on and forced overtime at 5-5. Michael Ryder netted the overtime goal less than two minutes into the extra frame, and the series was tied heading back south.

Montreal had several chances to take the series lead in two overtime periods in game five, but failed to beat Thomas for the winner. The Bruins’ netminder made 44 stops for the victory, and suddenly the momentum had shifted in Boston’s favor as well as the edge in goaltending. Nathan Horton eventually found the back of the net after several close chances, and that goal would push the Canadiens to the brink of elimination.

If the Canadiens are going to have any chance at pushing the series to a seventh game, they will need to get back to their game plan from the first two wins. Montreal dominated the first two contests, and a big part of that was the play of Price, who will also have to be better in goal. All of the pressure has now shifted from Boston to the Canadiens, and that could be a decisive factor as the teams get set for game six on Tuesday in a game that will be sure to take the focus off of the MLB betting Red Sox for at least one more night.
