Some online betting players have been surprised that Pittsburgh has done as well as they have without their captain, but they keep rolling along, even with the news that they may have him back this week. On Sunday, the Penguins welcome Boston to town, and the Bruins may be a little fatigued thanks to the schedule, so favor Pittsburgh, even if their captain is still in the press box.

What: NHL Betting
When: Sunday, March 11th, 12:30 PM ET
Where: Consol Energy Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins

Why Bet On Boston Bruins (39-23-3, 81 points)

The Bruins are in the midst of a busy stretch as they host Buffalo on Thursday, then Washington on Saturday before heading into Pittsburgh, and they snapped a two-game skid with a 5-4 win in Toronto on Tuesday, their fifth win of the season over the Maple Leafs. Tyler Seguing and Jordan Caron potted two goals apiece, while Chris Kelly added a single for the Bruins, who scored four goals in a wild second period. Tim Thomas stopped 25 shots for the Bruins, who held a 33-29 edge in shots, and while he wasn’t at his best, the rest of the team raised their game and saved their goaltender. It was a chippy game, as most are with Boston, but Toronto tried to come out and play a physical brand of hockey with arguably the toughest team in the league and that played right into the Bruins’ hands. It wasn’t a smart gameplan by the Maple Leafs, and Boston obliged them in every battle.

Boston had to acquire Marty Turco off waivers as Tuukka Rask (abdomen/groin) will be out for 4-6 weeks, and they need backup for Thomas, who hasn’t been sharp at all since his refusal to go to the White House. Daniel Paille (upper body) and Andrew Ference (lower body) have missed a couple games, while Rich Peverly (knee) and Nathan Horton (concussion) aren’t closer to coming back and the injuries are starting to pile up for the Bruins, who have been inconsistent and some NHL betting players may be shying away from the defending Stanley Cup champions. But all they have to do is make it to the playoffs, and they’ll be a tough out for anyone.

Why Bet On Pittsburgh Penguins (40-21-5, 85 points)

The Penguins also piled pressure on the Maple Leafs with a 3-2 win on Wednesday as Jordan Staal and Pascal Dupuis scored in the third period; the game-winner was Dupuis’ second of the game. Brad Theissen stepped in between the pipes to give Marc-Andre Fleury a rest and he responded with a 22-save performance as the Penguins outshot the Maple Leafs 33-24. Theissen has an edge over the slumping Brent Johnson in terms of being Fleury’s backup and he has played well when he has been called upon, although he won’t be replacing Fleury any time soon. Even though Fleury isn’t going to win the Vezina, he may get some Hart Trophy consideration as he has been excellent this season in the face of a number of injuries for the Penguins and he may steal some votes away from Evgeni Malkin, who had no points and was a -1 against the Maple Leafs. Malkin gets the benefit of the doubt because of how well he has played all season, but he could be getting some help on Sunday.

Derek Englelland (lower body) and Kris Letang (head) have both been out, but the Penguins may be captain Sidney Crosby (concussion) back for the Boston game, although he may even be able to play on Friday against Florida. Crosby’s issues have been an ongoing theme for more than a year and when he came back briefly earlier in the season, you saw why he is the best player in the game. The Penguins have been doing well without their captain anyway, but they surely wouldn’t be averse to having him back in the lineup, which would take pressure off Malkin. Keep an eye on the news to see if “Sid The Kid” will make his way back on to the ice.

How It Will Play Out

Pittsburgh should be the home favorites in this NHL betting contest as they’re 22-8-2 at Consol Energy Arena, but Boston is a good road team with a record of 20-11-1. The Penguins have won three of the last five meetings between the two, with four of the last five falling under the posted total.

The Bruins have been too inconsistent to trust as of late, and even if Crosby is still out, lean towards the Penguins, who should consider keeping Crosby out for this game anyway because everyone knows how physical the Bruins are, and we’re not going to say they’re a dirty team, but if you heard they were targeting Crosby’s head, would you be surprised? The Bruins will also be playing their third game in four days, so that should come into play. In a possible preview of the Eastern Conference finals, take Pittsburgh on Sunday in your sports betting book.
