Betting Predictions For Kings Coyotes - Phoenix Tries To Push Los Angeles

Posted by Don Melrose on 5/21/2012 3:04:29 PM

The 2012 NHL Playoffs have not witnessed many lengthy series in the Western Conference. That could change if the Phoenix Coyotes win Tuesday night on home ice in Glendale, Ariz.

NHL West Finals, Game 5: Los Angeles Kings @ Phoenix Coyotes – Tuesday, May 22'br. Sports betting line: N/A

Why Los Angeles Will Win

When you place a bet on an NHL playoff series after looking at any of several sports betting sites, you will sometimes be confronted by truly perplexing choices, but on other occasions, you will find that your selection should be rather obvious. Yes, the Los Angeles Kings are playing Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals on the road against the Phoenix Coyotes, but that shouldn't make you hesitate to pick them on Tuesday. In fact, the road is where Los Angeles has been particularly dominant in the postseason. The Kings are a solid 4-2 at home in the playoffs, but they're 7-0 on the road. More particularly, the Kings can use their first-round series against the Vancouver Canucks as a blueprint for this Game 5 battle with Phoenix. Against Vancouver,Los Angeles won the first three games of the series, lost Game 4 on home ice, and then went north to finish off the Canucks in Game 5 on the road.

That pattern could be replicated if L.A.can turn back Phoenix. Even in defeat on Sunday in Game 4, the Kings out shot the Coyotes by a healthy 36-21 margin. Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith had to stand on his head and play at the very height of his abilities just to give the Coyotes one win in the series. Phoenix was opportunistic, but Los Angeles still carried the play for a majority of the game, generating several high-quality scoring chances within 15 feet of the Phoenix net. It seems to be only a matter of time before the Kings beat Smith and reassert themselves. They don't have to change the way they're playing. They merely need to take fewer penalties, and they should be in very good shape. Given that coach Darryl Sutter's team has a 7-0 road record in the playoffs, it seems unwise to pick against this team on the road until it falters.

Why Phoenix Will Win

The Coyotes are still down by a 3-1 margin in this series, but by breaking through against Los Angeles on Sunday, coach Dave Tippett's team has generated a fresh supply of confidence that will serve the team well on home ice. Mike Smith hasn't played poorly in this series, but he lifted his level of play to a particularly lofty vista in Game 4, and if Smith can max out again, the Coyotes could begin to get in the heads of the Kings. Los Angeles still holds the cards in this series, but Phoenix is going to be really amped up on its home ice. The prospect of pushing this series to a Game 6 is quite realistic. It didn't seem nearly as likely before the equation-changing events of Game 4.

Who Will Win?

While Phoenix has some reason to hope, you don't bet against a big winning streak. Los Angeles owns the road in the NHL playoffs, so one should expect the Kings to go to 8-0 away from home in the postseason. The odds evened out a little bit for the Kings in Game 4; for once, the puck didn't bounce their way. In Game 5, as long as the Kings keep working hard, they should get the result they're looking for.
