Majority Of Bruins’ 2011 Core Back And Looking For Second Stanley Cup

Posted by Don Melrose on 6/11/2013 7:29:34 PM

If a lot of the names on the current Boston Bruins’ team seem familiar, there is a fairly simple reason for it. The majority of the players on the roster played for the Bruins during their Stanley Cup season in 2011, and are gearing up for what they hope will be their second championship celebration in three online sports betting seasons. The only players from the 2011 team that aren’t on Boston’s current roster are Mark Recchi, Michael Ryder, Tomas Kaberle, and Tim Thomas. Recchi retired, Thomas retired and passed on the goaltending torch to Tuukka Rask, who has done a brilliant job, and both Ryder and Kaberle were deemed expendable. The veteran core that includes captain Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, and Milan Lucic is still intact for the Bruins, and those three players are a big reason for this year’s Boston team challenging for a Stanley Cup.

It all begins with Chara, the Norris trophy-winning defenseman that still might be one of the most underrated players in the game. Chara is the rock on the Boston blue line that everything else is built around, and he spends more time on the ice than any other Bruins’ player. Chara always takes on the toughest online betting match ups, and that included helping to shut down both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin when Boston swept the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round. General manager Peter Chiarelli has done an excellent job surrounding Chara with big, strong defenseman like Andrew Ference and Adam McQuaid as well as a puck mover in Dennis Seidenberg, making it one of the best defense cores in the NHL.

The Bruins are also very deep up front, and Bergeron is one of their most complete forwards. Bergeron doesn’t have the luxury of lining up between Lucic and Nathan Horton the way that David Krejci does, but he has still posted 11 points in these playoffs including the series-clinching goals against both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Penguins. Bergeron is a two-way player that gives Boston just as much at the defensive end that he does up front, and he is also one of the best faceoff men in the league. The development of Brad Marchand on the second line and some solid depth have also played key roles, and now this group is shooting for its second Stanley Cup ring in three years.

The biggest difference between now and 2011 is the man in goal for the Bruins, and Rask has more than lived up to expectations. Rask has posted a 1.75 goals against average and .943 save percentage, and while he wasn’t on top of his game against the Maple Leafs in the opening round the same way his teammates weren’t, he allowed just two goals in the entire Eastern Conference Finals series and posted a pair of shutouts. Rask’s excellent goaltending is the final sports betting piece of the puzzle for a Boston team that is solid at all three levels, and now the majority of Bruins are in the Finals shooting for their second Stanley Cup ring in three years.
