Online betting players are likely still recovering from a wild first round in which four of the eight series went to seven games, and two more went to six games, with nine straight days in which there was at least one game going to overtime. Two of those seven-game combatants will face off in the Eastern Conference semifinals as Philadelphia and Boston go head-to-head, and the Bruins will be extremely motivated to erase last year’s playoff breakdown.

  • What: NHL Betting
  • When: Game 1 is on Saturday, April 30th, at 4:30 PM ET
  • Where: Games 1,2,5,7 (Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia); Games 3,4,6 (TD Banknorth Garden, Boston)
  • Pick: Boston Bruins

Why Bet On Boston Bruins

The Bruins needed overtime and a Game 7 to rid themselves of the Montreal Canadiens in the best series of the first round outside of Vancouver-Chicago, with four out of the seven games being decided by a goal, and three games went to overtime. Patrice Bergeron had two goals and seven points, and he also won 61.3% of his faceoffs, often in crucial situations in his zone, although the late penalty he took in Game 7 to give Montreal a power play, which they capitalized on. The Bruins may be going into this series without defenseman Andrew Ference, who will have a hearing for a shoulder check to the jaw of Montreal’s Jeff Halpern, and that would be a big loss as Ference led the Bruins with a +6 rating in the first round. But it was a real team effort where players like Chris Kelly (three goals, three assists), Rich Peverley (one goal, four assists) and pest Brad Marchand (one goal, four assists) made up for the play of Milan Lucic (two assists), who seemed to be gripping the stick tight and he looked nervous, especially early in the series. Tim Thomas gives the Bruins a big edge in goal, as he had a 2.25 GAA and a .926 save percentage, and he seems to love playing against Philadelphia, going 10-2 in 14 games with a 2.19 GAA and a .936 save percentage.

Thomas also wasn’t in goal last year when NHL betting players watched Boston collapse (and that’s an understatement), losing a 3-0 series lead to fall in seven games to the Flyers, so he won’t have that mental stigma in his head. But what about the rest of the team? That was only the third time in NHL playoff history that a team has lost a 3-0 series lead, and Boston can exorcise a lot of demons in this series. Also, the Bruins have to improve on a power play that was 0-for-21 in the first round. That can’t happen again if they want to move on to the conference finals.

Why Bet On Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers also had to go to seven games against Buffalo, but they definitely didn’t do it with a standout goalie like Thomas. Philadelphia used three goalies, Brian Boucher (4-1, 2.10 GAA, .934 save percentage), Sergei Bobrovsky (0-1, 3.38 GAA, .875 save percentage) and Michael Leighton (0-1, 3.44 GAA, .826 save percentage). It’s safe to say that Boucher has taken the reins in nets, but he also knows that he has a short leash. Offensively, the Flyers were led by Claude Giroux (one goal, eight assists) and Daniel Briere (six goals, one assist), who played like a man possessed against his former team. You can probably thank Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta for that, as word slipped out that Kaleta started chirping Briere about, of all things, his divorce, and Briere obviously didn’t take too kindly to that. Captain Mike Richards (no goals, five assists) and Kris Versteeg (no goals, five assists) provided a lot of grit and combined for a +11 in the series. The defense looked like they really missed Chris Pronger early in the series, and he came back for the last two games, which were both wins. Even though he didn’t play that much due to his ailing hand, Pronger just provides inspiration and leadership for a team that was in need of some.

You have to look at the goalie situation to find negative reasons to bet on Philadelphia’s NHL betting odds, because using three goalies in a series is ridiculous. It worked once, but it won’t work again, because Boston is a better team than Buffalo. Pronger has to be creeping closer to being 100%, and the Philadelphia defense is better when he is on the ice. Losing Jeff Carter to a knee injury is also huge and puts more pressure on the defense, as Carter is one of their best offensive players.

How The Series Will Play Out

It’s tough to say who has the upper hand in this series, as the Flyers had three more points than Boston during the regular season, but Boston won three of their four regular-season meetings against the Flyers, and they looked very inspired after last season’s playoff capitulation. The Bruins have won three of their five playoff meetings with the Flyers, but again, you can’t underestimate how much of an effect last year had on the Bruins.

We think it’ll affect the Bruins in a positive way, and we’re giving the edge to Boston because of their defense, led by captain Zdeno Chara and Thomas, and the Flyers losing Carter is a much bigger loss than Ference is for the Bruins, assuming that he will miss some time for his hit on Halpern. Place your sports betting pick on Boston.
