Situation Could Get Worse For Flyers Before It Gets Better

Posted by Don Melrose on 3/31/2013 6:53:14 PM

The Philadelphia Flyers will be in tough to make the playoffs in 2013. It won’t be easy to turn things around. The Flyers have gone from one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference to a team with more questions than answers heading in to this year’s trade deadline, and it could get worse before it gets better. Philadelphia will welcome the Montreal Canadiens to town this Wednesday night, in what will be a matchup of two teams that have completely turned things around from a year ago. Last season it was Montreal that struggled and the Flyers that made the playoffs, but this year’s Canadiens’ team has its eye on a Northeast division title.

Montreal has managed to go from one of the worst teams in the NHL to a legitimate playoff contender, and it all has to do with the change in the culture of the sports betting team. Michel Therrien has instituted a system and made sure that every player is held accountable for their actions on and off the ice, and that has helped steer the franchise in the right direction.

NHL Betting Preview: Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens haven’t looked anything like the team that finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference a year ago, and while Therrien’s system has been a big part of it, this team has actually been a lot stronger overall. The additions of Brandon Prust, Michael Ryder, Francis Bouillion, and rookies Alex Galchenyuk and Brandon Gallagher have made this team that much more dangerous, and Montreal has also benefited from the development of guys like Max Pacioretty and PK Subban in to legitimate star players. Carey Price has emerged as one of the top young netminders in the league, and the Canadiens will only get better as their young core continues to improve.

NHL Betting Preview: Philadelphia Flyers

Perhaps a stronger commitment to a system would benefit the Flyers, who have looked out of sorts at times this online betting season. Philadelphia hit a low point with a 4-3 loss to the New York Islanders late last week, and will have a tough time making up the six point deficit they face behind the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference. The Flyers rank among the worst teams in the NHL in goals per game allowed, and that has a lot more to do with the poor defense the team has played than it does its goaltending. Philadelphia has also struggled to score at five-on-five, ranking just 17th in the league in scoring despite owning the top-ranked power play.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Flyers have too much talent to be playing this poorly, and as bad as they have looked at times they should be able to steal a win or two over this next week and get back on track. Montreal continues to do enough to find ways to steal points, so look for them to try and force overtime before Philadelphia finally gets that win on home ice.

NHL Betting Pick: Philadelphia Flyers
