Two Old Rivalries Continue in the NHL Playoffs on May 3

Posted by on 5/2/2014 11:42:18 PM

The Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins have been hating each other since the NHL first started almost 100 years ago. Game one of this Eastern Conference playoff series between these two old rivals was a great hockey game that had all of the excitement any fan could ever want. When the Canadiens walked away with a double overtime win over the favored Bruins, it set up what promises to be a very interesting series.

The Anaheim Ducks have not been in the league very long, but there is already a history between the Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings. Both franchises have won a Stanley Cup and both franchises are considered to be the class of the Western Conference. As these two rivals get ready to renew acquaintances on Saturday, hockey fans around the country will be watching very closely.

Montreal Canadiens @ Boston Bruins – Saturday May 3, 2014 – Game 2

Most people felt that the speed of the Canadiens would be diminished by the size of the Bruins. After all, the Bruins are a physical team and the Bruins can skate. But people seem to forget that the Canadiens can be physical as well and Montreal showed its nasty edge in game 1. The goaltending for both teams was a little shaky, but Montreal’s Carey Price eventually held off the Bruins long enough for the Canadiens to score the double overtime winner. Antagonist P.K. Subban did his thing and completely threw many of the Bruins off their game.

In game 2, Boston fans can expect a much more disciplined Bruins team that will play positional hockey to try and slow down the much faster Canadiens. Boston goalie Tuukka Rask needs to step up his play if the heavily favored Bruins are going to get back into this series with a game two win.

Pick: Boston Bruins

Los Angeles Kings @ Anaheim Ducks – Saturday May 3, 2014 – Game 1

The Los Angeles Kings have never done anything the easy way. Even when the Kings won the Cup, the team was forced to earn every inch of ice it needed for the win. The Anaheim Ducks come into these playoffs as the top team in the Western Conference, and the Ducks did not disappoint in their opening series against the Dallas Stars.

This game one should be very interesting for both teams. The Kings do have some momentum going after winning game seven over the San Jose Sharks, while the Ducks have been sitting for a few days waiting to see who their next opponent would be. The Ducks ran into some goaltending issues late in their series against the Stars, and that could prove to be a problem as this series against the Kings gets underway. With Jonathan Quick playing well in Los Angeles, the Kings are primed for another playoff upset that could put Los Angeles on the track towards another Cup win.

Pick: Los Angeles Kings
