Kings Ready To Make A Run, Habs Should Be Able To Bounce Back On Tuesday Night

Posted by Don Melrose on 2/2/2015 11:57:55 PM

The consensus among the NHL experts is still that the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings will find their way back in to the postseason and get their chance to make another run but as it stands now they are currently on the outside looking in. The Kings opened a five-game trip with a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins and they are just five games above .500 on the year but considering what we know about them it could only be a matter of time before the tide turns and they go on a little run. Here is a quick look at the best bets on the board in the NHL for Tuesday night.

Los Angeles Kings @ Washington Capitals

Tuesday, 7:00 PM ET

Los Angeles and Boston were scoreless until late in the second period when Brad Marchand opened the scoring and while they were able to find their way back in to the game with the tying goal midway through the third the Bruins went back ahead less than two minutes later and then ended the game when Marchand scored an empty-net goal. The Kings have struggled with consistency up front all year and they will face another tough test against Braden Holtby and the Capitals on Tuesday. Washington has done a tremendous job under head coach Barry Trotz this year and they still have the firepower to put up some goals despite their renewed commitment to playing a more complete game. However, Jeff Carter, Anze Kopitar, and Marian Gaborik are feeling the greater sense of urgency right now and if they can get a couple of goals past Holtby then it will give Jonathan Quick a chance to lock it down and get back in the win column.

Pick: Los Angeles Kings

Buffalo Sabres @ Montreal Canadiens

Tuesday, 7:30 PM ET

The Canadiens scored two goals less than five minutes in to their game against Arizona on Sunday only to allow three-unanswered the rest of the way and blow a perfect opportunity to extend their win streak and climb back atop the Atlantic division standings. Whether it was fatigue or simply a lack of focus the bottom line is that Montreal let up and the surprising Coyotes pounced to steal the win. Now the Canadiens have had a couple of days to think about what happened and should be eager to bounce back with a convincing win. That would be bad news for the lowly Sabres if they weren’t already competing for the worst record in the NHL with a chance at the top pick in next year’s draft nearly in their grasp.

Pick: Montreal Canadiens

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Nashville Predators

Tuesday, 8:00 PM ET

Nashville is tied for the most points in the NHL thanks in big part to a ridiculous 19-2-1 home record and after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 on Sunday they should have no problem improving on that record back home this Tuesday. The last time these teams met was in mid-November when the Predators handed the Maple Leafs a 9-2 drubbing and it’s not very likely to be any prettier this time around. Toronto has lost nine in a row and at this point the Maple Leafs could very well prefer to continue to slide down the standings in order to improve their draft position. Either way, look for the Preds to dominate as they should be a lock to win.

Pick: Nashville Predators
