Red Wings Look To Make More Memories After Knocking Out Ducks

Posted by Don Melrose on 5/13/2013 7:47:26 PM

The Detroit Red Wings have had some memorable seasons over the past decade. From Presidents trophy wins to Western Conference championships, and of course the incredible Stanley Cup moments that online sports betting teams will never forget. However, despite everything that the Red Wings have accomplished over the years, this season is supposed to be different. Detroit is supposed to be in a transition phase. It is supposed to be building for the future. Maybe they are, but the Red Wings just eliminated the Anaheim Ducks in seven games, and now they are headed to the second round of the NHL playoffs where they will try and make more memories.

The biggest question mark heading in to this year was the loss of captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who finally decided to retire in 2012. A winner of multiple Norris trophies as the league’s best defenseman and the Red Wings’ longtime captain, Lidstrom’s absence has left a major hole on Detroit’s blue line. However, captain Henrik Zetterberg stepped up and took on a bigger leadership role in the locker room, and was once again there on the score sheet in game seven against the Ducks. Zetterberg opened the scoring for the Red Wings and then assisted on the eventual game-winning goal by Valtteri Filppula. While he was the one in the box when Anaheim cut its deficit to one with a late third-period goal, he was also the one out helping to kill off the final three minutes of regulation in order to secure the online sportsbook victory. Zetterberg is a superstar talent that has become an even stronger leader since becoming captain, and it will be him that leads the way in to the second round.

Detroit has also gotten some big contributions from throughout its lineup as well, including a number of depth players that have stepped up. Justin Abdelkader scored a shorthanded goal less than three minutes after the Ducks tied game seven to make it 2-1, while Valtteri Filppula also had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings. Zetterberg leads Detroit with three goals and eight points this postseason and Pavel Datsyuk has seven points. Next in line in terms of scoring is Daniel Cleary, Damien Brunner, Filppula, and Abdelkader. The Red Wings need their depth players to step up, and will be tested in a major way by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round.

Of course, none of this would be possible without Jimmy Howard, who has really stepped up to become a franchise goaltender. Howard’s .911 save percentage doesn’t tell the whole story of some of the big saves he had to make in the opening round, and he will need to be even better against the Blackhawks. This isn’t the same Detroit team that has won Presidents trophies and Stanley Cups over the past decade, but they aren’t going to back down either. The Red Wings gave their sports betting fans more memories by knocking off Anaheim in the first round, and will turn their attention to the second round with a chance to make some more.
