Devils, Bruins Set To Clash After NHL Trade Deadline

Posted by Don Melrose on 4/3/2013 7:21:21 PM

The Boston Bruins squeezed past the New Jersey Devils in a shootout when these teams met earlier in the online betting season. It won’t get any easier with two games in six days between these teams. Boston will host the Devils on Thursday after the dust from the NHL trade deadline settles, and it will be interesting to see how different these teams look if at all. The Bruins brought in Jaromir Jagr from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, and he should make his debut with the team against another legend of the game in Martin Brodeur for New Jersey.

The Devils are only two points up on the New York Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, so they should be the team playing with the greater sense of urgency. However, New Jersey hasn’t been very good on the road this season, and the Bruins are still chasing first place in the Northeast Division.

NHL Betting Preview: New Jersey Devils

The Devils have gone 5-6-7 on the road this season, and were in an interesting spot heading in to the trade deadline on the heels of four-straight losses. New Jersey is no longer in contention for the Atlantic division title following a good start, and with the focus on locking up a playoff spot they must find a way to start getting some points. Ilya Kovalchuk missing time has certainly hurt the team, but the Devils have weapons that need to step up with Patrik Elias, David Clarkson, and Travis Zajac all trying to find a more consistent level of compete. Brodeur has held down the fort this season with a 2.27 goals against average, but he needs more help in front of him.

NHL Betting Preview: Boston Bruins

The Bruins have gotten some excellent goaltending of their own with Tuukka Rask sporting a 2.02 goals against average, and he is a big reason why the team is 12-2-2 in its last 16 games. Boston ranks third in the NHL in goals per game allowed with an average of just 2.1, and they also have the top-ranked penalty kill in the league. There is some concern however in regards to leading scorer Patrice Bergeron, who was forced to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators with what could be another concussion. Bergeron leads the Bruins with 21 assists and 31 points this season, and losing him could be a big blow for a team that just brought in Jagr to help out an already average offense.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The sports betting experts are still convinced that Boston will come back and beat out the Montreal Canadiens for first place in the division. While that is a bit of a reach to agree with right now, there is no reason to think the Bruins can’t take care of New Jersey at home on Thursday. The Devils are mired in an awful slump and are struggling to score goals, something that wouldn’t have been easy to do in Boston anyway.
