Devils Kings Betting Predictions – Kings Win First Stanley Cup In Franchise History

Posted by Don Melrose on 6/5/2012 3:42:45 PM

No sports betting sharp would have picked Los Angeles to win the Stanley Cup heading into the postseason as an eighth seed, but the Kings have dominated en route to being within a game of the first Cup in their franchise history. They can wrap up the series on Wednesday at home and a tired New Jersey team won’t put up much resistance.

What: NHL Betting
When: Wednesday, June 6th, 8:00 PM ET
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA
Pick: Los Angeles Kings

Why Bet On New Jersey Devils

The Devils had a massive chance to put something on the board in the first period as they were on a two-man power play and even when Marek Zidlicky went to the penalty box, they were still up a man. But New Jersey failed to capitalize on their chance and then looked deflated in a 4-0 loss at the Staples Center in Game 3, and then they compounded the problem in the third period by giving up a pair of power-play goals to the Kings. The Devils failed to score on all six of their power-play chances and simply put, those are chances you have to take if you’re going to get back into a series. Martin Brodeur made 17 saves for the Devils, who look a little wore out, which shouldn’t surprise anyone after the playoff run that they’ve had. New Jersey needed seven games to beat Florida, then five games against Philadelphia and six grueling games against the New York Rangers and this isn’t to make excuses for them, but the Devils look far more tired than the Kings, who had played four fewer games than the Devils.

But the New Jersey offense has been abysmal throughout this Stanley Cup series, scoring two goals in three games and one of those was a lucky bounce that was given to Anton Volchenko. Head coach Pete DeBoer has to find a way to generate offense and the Devils’ players have to find a better way to get traffic in front of the net; they’re not going to pick corners on Jonathan Quick, so they need ugly goals or this will be over.

Why Bet On Los Angeles Kings

Quick stopped 22 shots for his third shutout of the playoffs, but he was immense in helping the Kings kill off that penalty, which allowed them to get to the intermission with a 0-0 tie and then the offense took over. Anze Kopitar, the Game 1 overtime hero, and Alec Martinez scored in the second period, while Jeff Carter (who notched the overtime winner in Game 2) and Justin Williams converted on the power play for the Kings, who also had 55 hits to 32 for the Devils. You can physically wear a team down and force them to make mistakes if they think you are barreling down on them and the Kings used this in Game 3. Captain Dustin Brown led the way with eight hits and his reckless style has played a massive role in Los Angeles’ success in the playoffs, and even though some think he toes the line between being physical and being dirty, that is up to the officials to call it and now his Kings are on the cusp of their first Stanley Cup.

It was also probably the best game that the Kings have played at the Staples Center, where they are now 5-3 as opposed to 10-0 on the road. The Kings didn’t look great in the first period, but the penalty kill late in the first period really gave the team a boost and once they got the first goal, it was on from there. But the Kings also didn’t take their foot off the gas and scored two more goals in the third period to put the game out of reach and when this Los Angeles team smells blood, they usually jump on the opposition. This will come in handy on Wednesday.

How It Will Play Out

Los Angeles are the NHL betting favorites at home in Game 4 at -183, while New Jersey is listed at +166 and they look like they are out of energy, while the Kings team is rolling and look like they just started the postseason before this series. Even the power play, which had been awful throughout the playoffs, stepped up in Game 3 and when that is working, the Kings are a force.

It would be nice to say that the Devils have something left in the tank, but a few early hits from the Kings will take them out of their game. The Kings know that they can’t afford to let up for a second and they seem to like not only defeating teams, but beating them to a pulp and that kill instinct will serve them well on Wednesday.
