The Anaheim Ducks have been one of he league’s hottest teams throughout the second half of the season, but even with a strong finish it will be hard to catch up to the group of teams fighting for the final playoff spots in the Western conference. The Ducks will travel to Colorado for a sports betting contest against one of those teams in the thick of the playoff race in the Avalanche, which despite their inconsistent play are still very much alive. One of the biggest reasons why Colorado is still alive is that they have been much better on home ice than on the road all year, and now they have to fight to earn a crucial two points against a determined Anaheim team.

The Ducks’ turnaround has coincided with the arrival of Bruce Boudreau on the west coast, but the fact that Anaheim has played 12 of its last 16 games on the road may have taken its toll on the club. After emerging from an eight-game road trip with a 5-3 record, the Ducks have lost their last three on the road, and will now play Colorado before returning home for six of their next seven.

NHL Betting Preview: Anaheim Ducks

The biggest difference for Anaheim under Boudreau has been how well the team has played at its own end, with Jonas Hiller the main beneficiary. Hiller has logged more minutes than any other NHL goalie this season as Boudreau continues to ride him in goal as they push to get back in to the mix of playoff teams, and despite a couple of rough outings the Ducks are still allowing much fewer goals on average than before the coaching change. The disappearance of Ryan Getzlaf this season has been daunting, as Anaheim’s top center has just nine goals on the year. Corey Perry and the ageless wonder Teemu Selanne continue to pick up the offensive slack, but the offense is limited on the road without the second change.

NHL Betting Preview: Colorado Avalanche

For the Avalanche, it has been a case of scoring by committee as a young team continues to develop and figure out its identity. Ryan O’Reilly leads the team in assists (34) and points (51), but it’s the rookie Gabriel Landeskog that leads the team in goals with 18. Colorado traded for more toughness when it acquired Steve Downie from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and his job will be to protect the younger players and chip in with the odd goal or two. The Avalanche have turned to goalie Semyon Varlamov a little more than JS Giguere as they try to fight for that final playoff spot in the east, and goaltending will be absolutely crucial to whether or not they get in down the stretch.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

While Colorado still has the better chance at a playoff spot, the Ducks still believe they can make it, and will definitely be the more desperate of the two teams in this game, and their attention to detail and structure will be the difference against a young Avalanche club. Anaheim has faltered somewhat as the amount of road games piles up, but with a long home stand right around the corner, they will seize this opportunity and get the crucial two points as the sports bet underdogs.
