How To Bet On Kings Devils - Kings Try To Win First Stanley Cup

Posted by Don Melrose on 6/7/2012 3:00:49 PM

The 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Finals have been extended by an extra game. The big question, however, is if the New Jersey Devils can extend it one more against the Los Angeles Kings.

Stanley Cup Finals, Game 5: Los Angeles Kings @ New Jersey Devils – Saturday, June 9
Sports betting line: N/A

Why Los Angeles Will Win

When you place a bet on an NHL playoff game after looking at any of several betting sites, you have to look at which team is able to ultimately assert its superiority in the latter stages of a best-of-seven series. Los Angeles has been really consistent throughout the playoffs and has shown that whenever it gets taken to a Game 5 situation on the road, it always pulls through. Los Angeles puts down the hammer when up 3-1 and forced to make one more plane flight; the Kings are 15-3 in the playoffs and have taken a 3-0 lead in all three of their playoff series to this point in time. In the first round of the playoffs, Los Angeles lost Game 4 against Vancouver but then finished off the Canucks in Game 5 in Canada. Los Angeles lost Game 4 at home against Phoenix but eliminated the Coyotes in Arizona in Game 5. Now, the Kings can do the same thing to lift Lord Stanley's Cup.

Los Angeles is 10-0 on the road in this postseason, something that's never been done before in the history of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Kings are also 4-0 in road overtime games, having won on the road in OT to clinch the Western Conference championship and then win Games 1 and 2 of this series against the New Jersey Devils. Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter has sold his players on a defense-first style that has thoroughly baffled the New Jersey power play, killing off the last 20 New Jersey 5-on-4s and even snuffing out a 5-on-3 from the Devils in Game 3 of this series on Monday night in the City of Angels.

The Kings' offense has flourished in only one game of this series, but the eighth seed from the West has been able to block shots and confound the Devils' big scorers – Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise – throughout the Stanley Cup Finals. Most important of all is the fact that Los Angeles is getting top-shelf play from goaltender Jonathan Quick, who is clearly the favorite for the Conn Smythe Trophy (NHL playoff MVP) at this point in time. It would be very hard to pick against the Kings here, especially since a road game is what they like the most.

Why New Jersey Will Win

When you place a bet on an NHL playoff game, you can look at some trends while downgrading others, and in the case of the New Jersey Devils, the trend that needs to be looked at is the fact that the Devils have allowed more than one regulation-time goal to the Kings in only one game of this series, Game 3. In three of the first four games, the Kings have scored only one goal in 60 minutes of hockey. The Devils have not been losing most territorial battles; their power play has been horrible – and that's the difference in the series – but their penalty kill has been strong and their 5-on-5 game has been very solid. They just haven't been able to put enough pucks in net. As long as New Jersey keeps working hard, it can overtake the Kings and push this series a little longer.

Who Will Win?

While New Jersey is still competing hard and well, this is Los Angeles' game to lose. The Kings are in a zone right now. Everything they touch turns to hockey gold. Los Angeles will move its road playoff record to 11-0 and win its first Stanley Cup championship.
