Key Games To Look Forward To In The Hours After NHL Trade Deadline

Posted by Don Melrose on 4/2/2013 8:58:48 PM

The NHL trade deadline is Wednesday and that means by the time the 10 teams in action Wednesday night take the ice, they could have a much different look in terms of who is missing from their lineup after being traded, and who could be on their way to the team to help the rest of the way. The Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, and Philadelphia Flyers all figure to play a big role in the trade deadline from the Eastern Conference, while the Calgary Flames have been the big sellers in the West, and the Edmonton Oilers may finally be in the buyer category this time around.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Rangers
Wednesday, 7:30 PM ET

The Penguins have already acquired Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow, and Douglas Murray, but the sports betting rumors were that the team wanted to add at least one more center to round out its top-four lines. That need could be even more pressing if captain Sidney Crosby is out long term, as the team awaits concussion news after he had his jaw broken on a redirected slap shot that hit him square in the mouth over the weekend. That injury happened in Iginla’s first game with the club, but that will make him that much more important as the team looks to extend its incredible win streak. The NHL record for consecutive wins is 17, and if Pittsburgh beats Buffalo on Tuesday and New York on Wednesday they will tie that mark. The Rangers are a desperate hockey club that earned an important two points with a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night, but the Penguins are in a class of their own right now, even without Crosby.

NHL Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins - 120

Montreal Canadiens @ Philadelphia Flyers
Wednesday, 7:30 PM ET

The Canadiens and Flyers are both expected to be buyers on Wednesday, although they are in much different situations in the East standings. Montreal has won three-straight and are three points clear of the Boston Bruins for second in the conference, while the Flyers are 4-4-2 over their last 10 and are four points back of the Rangers for the final playoff spot in the East. Philadelphia has played its best hockey on home ice, but the Canadiens have also been solid on the road, posting a 12-3-2 online betting record away from home. Montreal has the talent to get the job done, and they should be able to squeeze past a Flyers’ team that will make too many mistakes as the pressure continues to build.

NHL Betting Pick: Montreal Canadiens + 120

Edmonton Oilers @ Calgary Flames
Wednesday, 10:00 PM ET

The Flames have been the big sellers in the West early on, moving Iginla and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester as they try to continue and stockpile young assets to build the franchise back up in to a contender with going forward. The Oilers took advantage of Calgary’s fire sale with a 4-1 win over the Flames on Monday, and will be looking to back that up with another online sportsbook win on Wednesday. Edmonton is finally in the conversation as a buyer as it looks to make a push for the playoffs down this final stretch, and they won’t be able to afford to lose games against teams like Calgary if they want to finally get back to the postseason.

NHL Betting Pick: Edmonton Oilers - 130
