Lightning Capitals Betting – Southeast Division Rivals Clash With Capitals Looking To Avoid Lightning Strike

With the Vancouver Canucks beating the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins squeezing past the Montreal Canadiens, all of the talk heading into the second round of the 2011 NHL playoffs has been centered on the idea of teams exorcising their postseason demons to set the tone for a successful run. But for Bruce Boudreau and the Washington Capitals, an opening round series win over the New York Rangers was only the beginning as a team that has become a perennial contender looks to prove that it can handle the rigors of a long playoff run as they get set to meet the Tampa Bay Lightning as the Kentucky derby betting approaches.

With names like Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin, and Mike Green, the Capitals have dominated the Southeast division and Eastern conference for years during the regular season, but it hasn’t translated into success when it matters the most. Washington hasn’t gotten past the conference semi finals under Boudreau, a trend that they will hope to finally end against the Lightning. After clinching the Presidents trophy as the team with the league’s most points a year ago, the Capitals took a three-games-to-one series lead against Montreal before dropping three straight to be eliminated in one of the biggest collapses in NHL history. That failure forced Washington to reconsider their game strategy for 2011, and a more defensively responsible team responded by taking down the Rangers in five games. Prior to beating New York, the Capitals’ last four playoff series’ had gone to seven games so it was refreshing for the sports betting fans to see their team show more of a killer instinct.

Standing in Washington’s way in the second round is a Lightning team that persevered through their own internal struggles to get past the Pittsburgh Penguins in a seven-game series the first round. Tampa Bay’s offense was little more than a one-man show by Martin St. Louis as the Penguins took a three-games-to-one series lead, but Steven Stamkos and Simon Gagne came alive the rest of the way to help the Lightning win three straight games to advance. One of the biggest factors in Tampa Bay making it past the first round was the incredible play of 41-year old netminder Dwayne Roloson, who allowed just four goals in the final three games. His matchup against rookie Michal Neuvirth in the Capitals’ goal will go a long way to determining the series. Neuvirth registered a 1.38 goals against average and .946 save percentage in the opening round, but the Rangers didn’t boast the same firepower as Tampa Bay.

The Lightning will put up a much stronger fight than New York did, but after watching them struggle against a Pittsburgh team that was without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the first round it’s difficult to envision them taking down an even stronger and healthier Capitals’ team. Washington will advance to its first conference final since 1998, where they will continue their fight to prove that they can win it all and avoid leaving the MLB betting Nationals as the city’s only spring hope.
