NHL Lines Betting – Capitals, Penguins Still Tops Despite Shaky Starts

The online betting odds for the Stanley Cup have yet to change that much as teams are just getting into the second month of the season, which means players are still getting their rhythm down. That means your thoughts shouldn’t have changed that much, but it’s still a good idea to check out the odds from time to time.

Favorites

Washington (+520) and Pittsburgh (+530) are still leading the way with the defending champions from Chicago (+750), Vancouver (+830) and Detroit (+925) trailing. The Capitals aren’t scoring with their usual abandon, but there is too much talent on that team for them not to pick it up at some point. Also, we all know they’re regular-season beasts, but the Capitals need to save something for the playoffs. It’s the same with the Penguins, who have already proven they can win, but Sidney Crosby had a players-only meeting a couple of games ago just to make sure everyone is on the same page. Chicago is the only team leading their division at this point, even after a ton of changes in the offseason, and a lot of it is due to a hot start from Patrick Sharp, who leads the league in goals. Detroit is a veteran team who knows it has to pace itself, but the Canucks are the team that we’re still not certain of. They’ve had a few injuries on their backline, and Roberto Luongo has been inconsistent so far.

Darkhorses

Boston (+1200), Los Angeles (+1200), San Jose (+1200) and Philadelphia (+1400) lead the next section of NHL betting candidates, and the Kings, Bruins and Flyers are all off to good starts, while the Sharks are starting to come on. The Kings are dealing with a few injuries right now, notably to Drew Doughty, but they also have yet to lose at home, which is going to be very important for them. Boston has been getting lights-out goaltending, especially from 36-year-old Tim Thomas, while the Flyers have benefitted from a home-heavy schedule to start out the 2010 NHL betting campaign. The Sharks, well, it truly doesn’t matter what they do in the regular season because we all know they’ll be in the top four seeds come playoff time. But what are they going to do in the postseason? Does anyone trust the Sharks when the games really matter?

Longshots

Your best NHL betting choices from this section would be New Jersey (+2500), Montreal (+2500), St. Louis (+2500) and Tampa Bay (+2500), and the first three are due to goaltending. The Devils always have a shot with Martin Brodeur between the pipes, but they just lost Zach Parise for a while, which will hurt a team that already struggles to score goals and alarmingly, the Devils have yet to win at home. The Canadiens have been getting good work from Carey Price, but how long before the Montreal fans and media turn on him again? The man he shared time with in St. Louis, Jaroslav Halak, is proving that his run in the playoffs last year was no fluke. The x-factor could be the Lightning, who are powered by the offensive exploits of Steven Stamkos, while Dan Ellis is a big upgrade in goal. The Lightning are also a young team that has just enough experience to guide the kids, and remember a few of the veterans won the Stanley Cup here before. It’s very unlikely that the Lightning are going to win the Cup this season, but they could be one of those teams that no one wants any part of when it comes down to the first round of the playoffs, so sports betting players should keep a close eye on them in 2010-11.
