NHL Betting Picks Online – Picks For The Early-Season Weekend

Posted by Don Melrose on 10/14/2011 10:54:25 AM

Serious sports betting players are easing their way into the NHL season, which is heading into its season weekend, and while the bulk of the action comes on Saturday, there is a California clash on Friday worth taking a look at. Here are five games to wager on during a busy weekend in the NHL.

Sharks Ducks Odds – Friday, 10:30 PM ET

The Ducks should probably be favored at home, although it won’t be by much (if at all) over their California rivals as Anaheim is only 5-5 in their last 10 at the Honda Center against the Sharks, with five games falling under the posted total (along with a push). The Sharks have played just once so far this year, doubling Phoenix 6-3 last Saturday, getting a pair each from Joe Pavelski and Andrew Desjardins. The Ducks followed up a 4-1 loss in Buffalo with a 2-1 shootout win over the Rangers in Sweden last weekend, so both teams should be rested. Take the road team and their firepower; Anaheim is slow to get going after their European trip.

Betting Edge: San Jose Sharks

Rangers Islanders Odds – Saturday, 7:00 PM ET

In the battle of New York, the Rangers should be favored on the road at Nassau Coliseum, where they are 7-3 SU in their last 10 trips. Seven of the last 10 have gone over the total, and even those these teams aren’t offensively explosive, they always seems to get up to play each other. In the last three meetings, one team has scored at least six goals. The Rangers will be happy to be back from Sweden, where they fell 3-2 to Los Angeles and 2-1 to the Sharks, while this will be the third of four straight home games to open the season for the Islanders; they were blanked 2-0 by Florida, but bounced back for a 2-1 win over Minnesota. Stay with the home team in your NHL betting picks.

Betting Edge: New York Islanders

Jets Coyotes Odds – Saturday, 7:00 PM ET

This game should be fun to wager on because, as you know, Winnipeg had their team relocated to Phoenix, but have come back in 2011 as the former Atlanta Thrashers, who didn’t fare too well in the desert. The Coyotes are 7-0-1 in their last eight at Arena against the old Thrashers, who are now the Jets, and Winnipeg will be trying to recover from a 5-1 romp at the hands of Montreal at home in their opener; they also play Thursday night in Chicago. This is Phoenix’s opener after losses in San Jose and Dallas, and they’ll be in Nashville on Thursday. That should be enough to carry the Coyotes to an NHL betting victory.

Betting Edge: Phoenix Coyotes

Kings Flyers Odds – Saturday, 7:00 PM ET

The Flyers should the favorites at home in this contest at the Wells Fargo Center, where they are 8-2 SU in their last 10 against the Kings, with six games coming in under the posted total. But there is a subplot in this game as Mike Richards returns to Philadelphia after being traded in the summer, and the former captain was rumored to be moved because he fostered a partying lifestyle in the dressing room; whether or not that was true, the Flyers shook everything up by trading away Richards and Jeff Carter, so something was going on. Philadelphia is 3-0 on the season after wins over Boston, New Jersey and Vancouver, while the Kings split a pair in Europe, beating the Rangers and losing to Buffalo. Look for Richards to have a big game and lift Los Angeles to the victory.

Betting Edge: Los Angeles Kings

Bruins Blackhawks Odds – 8:30 PM ET

Chicago should be the home favorites in this meeting of the last two Stanley Cup champions, and they’re 5-3-2 (remember when the NHL had tie games?) at the United Center against the Bruins, with seven games going over the total. This is the final game of a three-game homestand, which started with a win over Dallas, and they host Winnipeg on Thursday; Chicago also lost in Dallas in their season opener. The Bruins have dropped three of their first four, losing at home to Philadelphia and Colorado while falling in Carolina as well (Boston managed to beat Tampa Bay), and all three losses were by a goal. NHL betting players shouldn’t jump off the Boston bandwagon yet, they just have to get used to playing with a target on their back as the defending champions. But they have a four-game home stand that begins next week; they’ll fall on the road on Saturday. Go with the Blackhawks in your online betting picks.
