Sports betting players have moved from the Stanley Cup finals, which was won by Boston, to researching the prospects for the NHL draft, which takes place in Minnesota. Edmonton has once again earned the No.1 pick, and even though an offensive player is being touted as the No.1 pick, a defenseman is the smart play for the young Oilers.

  • What: NHL Betting
  • When: Friday, June 24th-Saturday, June 25th
  • Where: Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, Minnesota
  • Pick: Adam Larsson

The Favorites

Center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been the top-rated skater for a large part of the season, and the British Columbia native who plays his junior hockey in Red Deer has drawn comparisons to Joe Sakic, but he may be more of a passer than Sakic ever was. He’s extremely talented and Nugent-Hopkins will be looked over closely by Edmonton, who holds the No.1 pick. However, the Oilers already have a lot of young, offensive talent led by Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, and they may decide to start building their defense. In that case, Swedish defenseman Adam Larsson is the top-rated blue-liner heading into the draft, and he won’t be flustered by playing against older competition as he was only the third defenseman in history to play in the Elite League (Sweden’s version of the NHL) at 16 years old.

After these two, it’ll be tough for NHL betting players to figure out who goes next. Winger Gabriel Landeskog is from Sweden, but has been plying his trade in Kitchener, so he is used to the physical style of play in North America. Forward Jonathan Huberdeau is an offensive whiz who still has to fill out, but he just turned 18, and he has loads of offensive skill. Many feel center Sean Couturier could be the best player of all because not only is he a fantastic offensive player, he’s also a big forward, and you can’t teach size.

The Second Tier

Ryan Murphy leads this group of prospects, and he is a great puck-moving defenseman, albeit a little small, so he may have to go to the minors for a year or so to put on some weight. But he has the talent to be one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL in three years, very similar to Nashville prospect Ryan Ellis. Defenseman Dougie Hamilton is much larger than Murphy, but can also put the puck in the net from the blue line. In all likelihood, he’ll enter the league as a stay-at-home player because of his size, but expect Hamilton to pick up his offensive game sooner than you think. Nathan Beaulieu is another defenseman looking to move up the ranks in the draft, and he’s more of an offensive threat. Like most of the players in this draft due to their age, Beaulieu has to fill out some in order to be an effective NHL defenseman, but offensively, he’s already ahead of the curve.

Moving away from the defensemen, center Ryan Strome has emerged have an excellent season in Niagara, and he finished third in the OHL in scoring with a soft pair of hands. He will probably end up playing another year in junior as he is just turning 18 next month, but Strome’s potential ceiling is extremely high. Sweden’s Mika Sibanejad is a late bloomer, but he has good size, especially for a European forward, and he knows how to use his size to be a nuisance in front of the net and in the corners.

The Longshots

Looking a little further down the list, defensemen Oscar Klefbom and Duncan Siemens are trying to crack the top 10, and Siemens may be more ready to play right now than his Swedish counterpart. Siemens loves to hit and play physical, but he can chip in with goals and points as well. Klefbom, who turns 18 in July, is a little bigger than Siemens, but not as physical. He’s better with the puck, though, so Klefbom has that part of the game down.

The highest-rated American is winger Tyler Biggs, and even though he has fallen down the rankings since the beginning of the year, Biggs is definitely worth a first-round pick. He’s a large player with good hands, and he would fit in nice on a team with smaller players, such as Buffalo or St. Louis. Biggs should be proud if he manages to sneak into the top 10, but he’s more likely a mid-first round selection.

How It Will Play Out

Nugent-Hopkins is the most talented offensive player in this draft, but if the Oilers want to make the right choice to boost their NHL betting odds, Larsson is the best pick. They have plenty of skill up front, and those players are young, but the Oilers were second from the bottom of the league in terms of goals against, and as the old adage states, “defense wins championships”. Larsson is ready to play in the NHL right now, so if you’re going to wager on the No.1 pick in the NHL draft, Adam Larsson is the online betting pick to make.
