Smaller Market Drives Prices Up Ahead Of NHL Trade Deadline

Posted by Don Melrose on 4/1/2013 7:48:18 PM

With the NHL trade deadline here, it will be one of the busiest times of the year for online betting teams and their fans. Regardless of the number of moves made, every general manager has to do his due diligence to make sure he does everything possible to put his team in a better situation, whether it has to do with adding a talent that could make the team a stronger threat in the immediate future, or a young asset that could help the franchise down the line. Determining whether a team is a buyer or seller at the deadline will be even tougher this year with so many teams still in contention, and the smaller market for talent should make the price even higher for teams looking to add at this week’s deadline.

The Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs figure to be among the biggest players in the Eastern Conference heading in to the deadline. Boston missed out on adding Jarome Iginla when the former Calgary Flames’ captain decided after a trade had already been agreed to that he no longer wanted to play for the Bruins, and was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins instead. That hurt Boston in the sense that they lost Iginla’s skill set, but it also made one of the team’s they expect to compete with for a sports betting chance at the Stanley Cup finals better in the Penguins.

Ryan Clowe is a player that has been mentioned when it comes to the Bruins, but the asking price the San Jose Sharks have is pretty high, and Boston could end up looking elsewhere for some more skill. The Maple Leafs meanwhile are in talks with the Vancouver Canucks about adding Roberto Luongo, and it could by Tyler Bozak headed the other way since the asking price is a No. 3 center and draft pick. Toronto is also in the market for a veteran defenseman, and with a sense of urgency surrounding the franchise as they look to end a seven-year playoff drought they should be in the mix.

Even after dealing Iginla, the Flames appear to be among the most active team in the West heading in to the deadline. Calgary has committed to a rebuild, and they have several assets that could garner interest around the league. There have been reports that the Ottawa Senators are interested in acquiring Curtis Glencross for the right price, while Michael Cammalleri, Jay Bouwmeester, and Lee Stempniak could all garner attention. The Flames would like to add a young goaltender that could take the reigns from Miikka Kiprusoff going forward, and Ben Bishop could come back the other way in any deal with the Senators. The Anaheim Ducks are looking to add a key online sportsbook piece as they get set to do battle with the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference, with Dallas Stars’ center Derek Roy and Washington Capitals’ center Mike Ribeiro expected to be their two main targets.

The NHL trade deadline is one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year for teams and fans, and that will be true again regardless of the number of moves that are actually made. The smaller market means it will cost more to add at the deadline, and it will be interesting to see which teams make the decision to stay away, and which teams decide to jump right in.
