Online NHL Hockey Betting – Picks For The First Four Days Of The Season

Posted by Don Melrose on 10/5/2011 7:19:25 PM

Sports betting players waiting for their hockey fix don’t have to wait much longer as the puck drops of the NHL season as of Thursday, and from Thursday to Sunday, there is enough to keep you occupied, including a pair of games featuring the defending Stanley Cup champions. They’ll face off against two of the teams that they beat en route to the Cup, while you’ll also get an East/West meeting in the City of Angels, while NHL hockey returns to Winnipeg for the first time since 1996.

Flyers Bruins Odds – Thursday, 7:00 PM ET

The Bruins should be the NHL betting favorites at home in this rematch of last year’s second-round sweep for Boston, who avenged a seven-game collapse from the previous playoffs. The Flyers made some huge moves in the offseason, getting rid of former captain Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, while picking up Ilya Bryzgalov to (hopefully) solve their goalie issues. The Bruins are 6-4 in their last 10 in Boston against the Flyers, with five games going over the posted total (along with a pair of pushes), but we’re backing Philly on opening night. They’ll have some motivation after the way Boston brushed them aside last year, and the Bruins had a busy offseason with their Cup responsibilities.

Betting Edge: Philadelphia Flyers

Rangers Kings Odds – Friday, 1:00 PM ET

New York heads to the West Coast on Friday afternoon for a matinee, and they’re 5-4-1 in their last 10 in Los Angeles, with five games falling under the posted total. The Rangers have released Sean Avery, which will help the team as they don’t have to deal with his off-ice distractions, but a bigger worry for their NHL betting odds is the possible absence of defenseman Marc Staal, who has been out with concussion symptoms. Staal is their best blueliner and the Rangers need all the help they can get on defense. Brad (New York) and Mike (Los Angeles) Richards will be making debuts for their new teams, and Mike surely has some insight into the Rangers from his time in Philadelphia.

Betting Edge: Los Angeles Angels

Lightning Bruins Odds – Saturday, 7:00 PM ET

Boston-Tampa Bay may have been the most exciting series of last season, with the Bruins pulling it out in seven games, and the last six were decided by two goals or less. The Lightning lost playoff hero Sean Bergenheim (Florida) and Simon Gagne (Los Angeles) to free agency, but they still have largely the same cast that pushed Boston to seven games, but the key to the season is the defense, because we all know they can score. The Bruins should be settled in after their loss on opening night and they won’t want to lose two in a row at home to begin the season: Boston fans have been through enough as of late (yes, we mean you, Red Sox fans).

Betting Edge: Boston Bruins

Canadiens Jets Odds – Sunday, 5:00 PM ET

Finally, the Winnipeg Jets return to the NHL with a huge game against Montreal, a pair of Canadian teams that is sure to drive up the ratings. But when you get down to it, you still have the core of an Atlanta team that stumbled badly in the second half of last season after a promising start. The Canadiens are licking their wounds after losing to the Bruins in seven games in the first round of last year’s playoffs, but goalie Carey Price should be even better; now, the Canadiens just have to score in front of him. The Jets have already had some issues in the form of Dustin Byfuglien’s legal troubles, but the fans won’t care on Sunday: hockey is back in Winnipeg and they’re going to come out in droves to support their team. Overall, the two franchises have split their last 10 meetings, with half of the games going over the posted total, but this is a new start for all involved. Look for the Jets to ride their home-ice advantage to a online sports betting victory.
