Predictions On Capitals Rangers Betting – Rangers Nip Caps In Exciting Game 7

Posted by Don Melrose on 5/11/2012 3:05:11 PM

Sports betting players have watched an incredibly close series in the Eastern Conference between New York and Washington in which all six games have been decided by two goals or less, and the last five have been decided by a goal. There isn’t much between the two, especially in goal, but the Rangers should get the edge at Madison Square Garden.

What: NHL Betting
When: Saturday, May 12th, 7:30 PM ET
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
Pick: New York Rangers

Why Bet On Washington Capitals

Regardless of what happens in Game 7, goalie Braden Holtby has earned a look from an NHL team, whether it is in Washington or elsewhere. His 400 saves are now first in the playoffs after stopping 30 more shots in a 2-1 Game 6 win at home, and the Rangers’ lone goal was a fluke as it went off someone’s back in front of the 22-year-old, who was unflappable and made a number of glove saves. Alex Ovchekin and Jason Chimera notched goals for the Capitals, while Nicklas Backstrom added a pair of assists, but Holtby was the story and has been throughout Washington’s playoff run because they probably shouldn’t have gotten past Boston in the playoffs. The Rangers outshot the Capitals in all three periods, and 31-23 overall, but Holtby stood tall and showed a swagger that can only come from a 22-year-old that doesn’t know any better, and he is the reason that Washington is going to the Big Apple for a Game 7.

There are no new injuries to report for the Capitals, who should be applauded for the way they’ve played in the postseason as they’ve bought into Dale Hunter’s defensive system and they’ve proven that they can play at that end of the ice; of course, it’s nice to have the hot goalie in a series as the Capitals have run into their share of netminders that simply won’t break over the past few seasons. Holtby has to outplay his New York counterpart to get the Capitals to the next round; he is the key to their NHL betting odds on Saturday.

Why Bet On New York Rangers

Marian Gaborik got credit for the Rangers’ goal with 51 seconds left in the third period, but he got lucky as it hit something or someone (it seems to have hit a Washington defender) and New York didn’t have any room to be picky about how they scored, that’s how hot Holtby was. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced, and he didn’t have a chance on either of them as Ovchekin’s goal was a laser from the slot on the power play after some nice passing and a pitiful clearing attempt by defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who has been a pillar of consistency in this postseason run. The other, Chimera had a wide-open net not because of Lundqvist, but because of another defensive breakdown. In a game of hot goalies, mistakes like these make all the difference in the world and the Rangers slipped up on these occasions and they have to play the perfect game on Saturday to reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 1997.

The only injury that New York has is Brandon Dubinsky (foot), and he has been out for the entire series, so the Rangers should be fine and all hands will be on deck for what should be a crazy Game 7. The Rangers’ biggest mistake probably came in the second period when Washington’s Jeff Halpern received a four-minute penalty for high-sticking and the Rangers did absolutely nothing with it. Overall, the Rangers were 0-of-5 on the power play and that isn’t going to do you any favors when you’re trying to close out a team on the road. If the Rangers get another opportunity like that, they’ll have to take it or else they’ll be setting up tee times on Sunday morning.

How It Will Play Out

New York are the NHL betting favorites at home in this Game 7 affair at -141, while the Capitals come in at +128 with an over/under of 4.5, which seems absurdly low, but not when you look at these two netminders. Five goals have been scored three times in the series, and one of those occasions came in overtime, but you should expect Holtby and Lundqvist to shine under the bright lights of a Game 7.

This will come down to the defensive play of both teams because the goalies are going to play well, and in situations like this, that is usually what decides a game and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the two went to overtime for the third time in the series. Give the slightest of edges to Lundqvist, a Vezina and Hart Trophy nominee, and wager on the Rangers in Saturday’s online betting picks.
