Rangers Penguins Betting Tips – Rangers Struggles Likely To Continue In Pittsburgh This Saturday

Posted by Don Melrose on 3/12/2013 7:52:33 PM

The New York Rangers have frustrated head coach John Tortorella time and again this season. That is very likely to continue this online sports betting weekend. The Rangers will visit the Atlantic Division-leading Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday in another tough test, as they continue to try and a level of consistency in their game. New York has split its first nine road games so far this season, but has dropped each of its first two contests against the Penguins, and now heads in to hostile territory against a red-hot Pittsburgh team.

CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
NHL Sportsbook Line: Pittsburgh – 140

The Penguins pieced together five-straight wins last week to pull to first in the Atlantic division, and with so many talented teams in their own division, they have to realize how important home ice advantage will be come playoff time. Sidney Crosby is healthy and back up to speed after missing nearly all of last year, and as long as he and Evgeni Malkin are centering Pittsburgh’s top two lines they will be hard to slow down.

NHL Betting Preview: New York Rangers

The Rangers have had their share of struggles trying to stop opposing offenses this season, but overall have been very good. New York ranks sixth in the NHL in goals per game allowed, and while Henrik Lundqvist has bounced back to look much better following a rough start, the defense in front of him has also been much better. The problem has been the lack of consistency at the other end of the ice, as the Rangers have really struggled to score goals. New York ranks 18th in the NHL in goals per game despite stars like Rick Nash and Marian Gaborik, and must find a way to score more goals beginning with improvements to the league’s 22nd-ranked powerplay.

NHL Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins

The highest-scoring team in the NHL certainly hasn’t had any problems in that regard, as Pittsburgh has averaged 3.7 goals per game thanks to two very balanced scoring lines. Crosby and Malkin have centered the top-six, and are the biggest reason why Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis, and James Neal could all threaten to score 20 goals this online betting season. If there is one area where the Penguins can be better, it is at their own end where netminder Marc-Andre Fleury has posted a 2.71 goals against average. Fleury will need to play better for Pittsburgh to have a shot at hockey’s biggest prize, but the team in front of him will also have to do its part.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

As much as the Rangers need this game and should come out flying, they just don’t have the weapons that Pittsburgh does, and have really struggled against them this season. Consistency has eluded New York for most of this year, and the Penguins have the kind of weapons to make them really pay if they let off the gas even a little. Crosby and company tallied nine goals in the first two wins over the Rangers, and should be able to hit that average with a third-straight victory in this season series.
