No Looking Back For Penguins As They Continue To Roll With Vokoun

Posted by Don Melrose on 5/16/2013 6:37:00 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins split their first four games of the 2013 NHL playoffs, conceding an average of just over four goals per game over the final three of those sports betting contests. The Penguins have put together three-straight wins since, allowing an average of just over one goal per game over that span. The only difference between the two groups of games is Tomas Vokoun taking over for Marc-Andre Fleury, who may sit the rest of the postseason and watch as long as the veteran Vokoun continues to shine. Vokoun turned away 35 of the 36 shots he faced against the Ottawa Senators in game one of their Eastern Conference Semi-Final series, and will be back between the pipes for game two.

Goaltending was projected to be the one area where Ottawa had the upper hand, but with Vokoun improving to 3-0 in game one and Craig Anderson struggling with a .867 save percentage, that no longer appears to be the case. The Senators will need to do a better job of protecting Anderson while creating more traffic in front of Vokoun, but that is obviously a lot easier said than done at this point.

NHL Betting Preview: Ottawa Senators

Colin Greening was the lone Ottawa forward to score in game one, and his goal came less than five minutes in. That means the Senators could not find the back of the net for the final 55 minutes of regulation, a streak that will now carry over to game two. Ottawa isn’t going to get the kind of soft goals it managed to score against the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round, and will have a much tougher time containing the Penguins’ attack. Pittsburgh can attack with four lines, and if the Senators are going to hang around they will need to generate more scoring opportunities of their own.

NHL Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins

Evgeni Malkin led the way for the Penguins with a goal and an assist in game one, and it is scary to think that he still believes he can do better for Pittsburgh. Malkin is among the league leaders in points this postseason, and if the top line with Sidney Crosby manages to start putting up some offensive numbers at the same time, this sports betting series will be over in a hurry. Vokoun has been excellent in goal for the Penguins so far, but it isn’t like Pittsburgh didn’t put up four goals against Anderson in game one.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

As long as the offense continues to click, the Penguins will be nearly impossible to stop. Pittsburgh did nearly everything right in game one, from the offensive touch to the physical play, and it will be hard to get them off of their game. The Senators will have a better shot trying to match lines at home, but even then it is going to be tough to slow down this Penguins’ attack.
