Jagr Looks To Step Up Production Versus Penguins Heading Into Game One

Posted by Don Melrose on 5/29/2013 7:47:42 PM

22 years ago a young star named Jaromir Jagr won his first of back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fast-forward more than two decades later, and it’s Jagr now trying to help keep the Penguins from reaching the Stanley Cup Final. Jagr will look to help provide the Boston Bruins with a spark as they clash with Pittsburgh in game one of the Eastern Conference Final on Saturday night. The 41-year old veteran has struggled to finish through the first two sports betting rounds with just four points in 12 playoff games, and the Bruins will need him to step it up against the high-flying Penguins.

Jagr was traded to Boston only after the Bruins failed to land Jarome Iginla, who decided his talents were better suited for Pittsburgh at the NHL trade deadline. Boston had a deal in place to bring Iginla aboard, but the longtime Calgary Flames’ captain decided at the last minute to request a move to the Penguins, and the rest is history.

Tyler Seguin is another offensively gifted player that has struggled to produce for the Bruins, as he also has just four points through 12 playoff games. The fact that David Krejci leads the NHL in scoring with 17 points and has carried the offense for Boston on a line with Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton has made the difference to this point, but it’s going to take more production from Jagr and Seguin to reach the Stanley Cup final. The Bruins are a very physical team that can roll four lines and really wear opponents down, but they will need Tuukka Rask to have his best series of the playoffs in order to keep the high-flying Pittsburgh offense from breaking through.

NHL Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins will counter with one of the biggest surprises of the postseason to date, as Tomas Vokoun has gone 6-1 with a 1.85 goals against average and .941 save percentage since taking over for the struggling Marc-Andre Fleury in the first round. Pittsburgh has cut its goals against average nearly in half since making the goalie change, and Vokoun will need to continue to play at a high level if that is going to carry through the conference final. The Penguins have three of the league’s top four scorers through two playoff rounds, led by Evgenki Malkin and Kris Letang with 16 points each. Iginla is right behind them with 12 points in 11 playoff games, and will be public enemy No. 1 for the Bruins in this online sports betting series.

NHL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Both teams will have plenty of time to rest and prepare ahead of Saturday night’s series opener, and that should lead to plenty of fireworks in the opening period. Boston will look to get after Pittsburgh’s skilled forwards and really set the tone physically, and if they can get all four lines generating scoring chances again they will be tough to adjust against. Vokoun has been excellent to this point in the playoffs, but Rask is considered to be the stronger netminder and that could show in such a tight game one.
