Like Jay-Z said, “I got a million problems” and that is what The Apache found out in the Arlington Million last weekend at Arlington Park in Chicago.

The South African millionaire was making his stateside debut for trainer Michael de Kock and he ran his eyeballs out all for naught, as his efforts were not rewarded.

Going into the Million The Apache had won 7 of his 19 starts including a Group 1 in his native land in 2011 and a Group 2 in his 2013 opener.

Last weekend, The Apache broke slowly and was forced to race 4 wide early. He had to race in tight and between rivals and was fully engaged by Real Solutions in the final stages of the race and made repeated contact with that foe down the lane.

At the end, The Apache finished first by a head but the rider of Real Solutions, Alan Garcia, lodged a claim of foul and the stewards conducted an inquiry. Eventually Real Solutions was put up for the win and The Apache had to settle for second money after bumping Solutions 3 times in the final 200 yards.

The Apache’s rider Christophe Soumillion was adamant his horse was best even in defeat, Soumillion: “We were the better horse, but he got scared by the screen and shifted out. My horse was on the lead and got a little unbalanced. The screen scared him, but we were the best horse.”

Real Solutions owners, Ken and Sarah Ramsey, had an unbelievable afternoon as the won their 3rd Grade 1 race of the day when Solutions was put up.

They had won the Secretariat with Admiral Kitten and the Sword Dancer with Big Blue Kitten.

Ramsey: “It was yes, no, yes, no, yes, no, yes. But a Kitten by any other name is still a Kitten. Bred in Pennsylvania, Real Solution opened his career winning 3 races in Italy but was sidelined because of a lung infection last year.

Ramsey: “After the lung infection we had to treat him and figured we’d have to run him Lasix since his lungs were damaged. So we thought it would be best to run him back in the states where he could run on Lasix.”

Lasix is a banned substance in Europe but all turned out well for trainer Chad Brown and Real Solutions.

Real Solutions has now won half of his 8 starts and he is not finished yet. He is the first to win from his winning dam Reachfortheheavens.

Reachfortheheavens also foaled Matagot and that runner should be watched. He has had 6 chances to break his maiden but he has encountered trouble often.

In tight in his debut, he posted his best Beyer in defeat next out and was forced to steady in his March finale. Hung wide in 2 of his next 3 races, Matagot was gaining late in his last race, a claimer at Golden Gate.

Now trained by Doug O’Neill, this sophomore appears to be figuring it out finally and bears watching.

Good luck and find those real solutions.
