Man O’ War Stakes Betting – Optimizer Rolls To The Win At Belmont Park

Posted by on 7/11/2013 6:35:49 PM

Sports betting sharps following horse racing should know the horse in which the Grade-1 Man O’ War Stakes is named after. Man O’ War won 20 of his 21 starts, including two Triple Crown races in 1920, and is known as one of the greatest horses of all time. That means a lot of pressure comes with this event, which is 1 3/8 miles on grass, and Optimizer will be the next to put his name on the esteemed list of winners at Belmont Park.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, July 13th, post time TBA
Where: Belmont Park, Elmont, NY
Pick: Optimizer
(All horses listed as probable as of Wednesday, July 10th)

Al Khali has struggled a bit in 2013, finishing seventh in the Grade-2 Elkhorn Stakes after a fifth in an allowance race. Things got off to a good start after he won an allowance race in March, but it has been all downhill since then and Al Khali needs a good finish to give horse betting players a little faith in him. This seven-year-old has had good results in the past, and he finished fifth in this event back in 2011. Trainer William Mott may need to settle on a jockey after putting three different people on Al Khali in three races this year.

Boisterous is trying to give trainer “Shug” McGaughey back-to-back wins in the Man O’ War Stakes after he won it with Point of Entry in 2012. Point of Entry is injured and can’t return to defend his title, so Boisterous has been drafted to keep the crown in the family. He is coming off a huge win in the Grade-2 Monmouth last month and he hasn’t finished lower than third in his last five starts, including three wins, and they have all been graded-stakes events. This six-year-old is going to be one to watch on Saturday.

Bombaguia is one of four horses coming off a start in the Grade-1 Manhattan Handicap, but he finished eighth, so that isn’t encouraging to horse betting players. He had a couple of second-place finishes in his first two starts of 2013 (an allowance race and the Grade-3 Fort Marcy Stakes, which took place at Belmont Park), but he has just five graded-stakes starts in 21 career outings and this five-year-old will need to step up to the competition.

Exclusive Strike won an allowance race at Belmont Park in his last start and trainer Jason Servis will hope that carries over to a graded-stakes race. It was his second straight win, but both have come in allowance races and like Bombaguia, he’ll have to take it up a notch if he is going to compete seriously on Saturday. Only one of his 28 starts have been in a graded-stakes race, and that was a sixth-place finish in the Grade-2 Red Smith Handicap back in November 2011.

Finnegans Wake finished fourth in the Manhattan Handicap, but he hasn’t won a race since an allowance event in June of last year, a span of seven races. This four-year-old colt has run in a few big races and has some good results under his saddle, but he is also very inconsistent and you never know what you’re going to get with him, so wager with caution, although you never know what is going to happen in the wonderful world of horse betting.

Optimizer finished second to Point of Entry at the Manhattan Handicap and this will be his eighth start of 2013 (all graded-stakes races). He hasn’t finished lower than fifth in any race this year and has posted two wins, and he is trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who has won the Belmont Stakes four times and won the Preakness this year, so it may be time to catch lightning in a bottle as he is as hot as any trainer in the game. Lukas’ talents, combined with the skill and speed of this four-year-old colt, could lead to a victory on Saturday.

Speaking Of Which won an allowance race at Monmouth last month, and it was needed after a sixth at the Fort Marcy Stakes and a 13th in the Grade-1 Hollywood Derby. This four-year-old has just eight starts under his belt (five in graded-stakes races) and he has three wins. However, all of his starts have come on turf; how will he handle grass? One good thing for Speaking Of Which is that he is trained by Chris Clemente, a two-time winner in this event.

Twilight Eclipse rounds out the field after a fifth at the Manhattan Handicap, which followed a win in the Grade-2 Pan American Stakes and he will also be running on grass after spending most of his career on turf. Surfaces do make a big difference to horse betting players, so keep that in mind.

How It Will Play Out

Lukas is hot in 2013, and Optimizer is a speedy horse. He should be your online betting pick on Saturday.
