Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes Betting – Can Anyone Stop Wise Dan At Keeneland?

Posted by on 2/5/2014 5:00:09 AM

Sports betting players should know a stud when they see one in any sport, and Wise Dan certainly qualifies. This colt is on a roll heading into the final portion of the season, and he should continue his hot streak as the defending champ in the Grade-1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. He could receive a challenge, but he’ll show why he is up there with the best thoroughbreds in the country.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, October 5th, post time TBA
Where: Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, KY
Pick: Wise Dan

(All horses entered as of Wednesday, October 2nd)

Handsome Mike has been busy as a four-year-old as this will be his 20th career start, and 18th in a graded-stakes event. He has four wins, three coming in graded-stakes races, and he has run on every type of surface the sport has to offer. However, this colt is also coming off a 10th-place finish in the Grade-2 Pat O’Brien Handicap in August. Maybe a return to Keeneland, where his last win came back in April (the Grade-3 Commonwealth Stakes) will be a spark for his horse betting chances.

Silver Max has been victorious in his last two outings, the Grade-3 Oceanport in July and the Grade-2 Bernard Baruch Handicap in August. In 21 starts, this colt has 10 wins, and four have been in graded-stakes events after needing six attempts to break his maiden, but at least all of those graded-stakes wins have come on turf, so that should be encouraging.

Skyring, like the first two horses, has also been active as a four-year-old as this will be his 23rd start, in which he has four wins, but his victory in the Grade-2 Dixie Stakes in May was a surprise. That was his lone win in nine starts since finishing 10th in this event last year, so Skyring may need a little help to pull out a horse betting upset on Saturday.

Summer Front has won his last two starts, the Grade-3 Miami Mile in April, and then the Grade-3 Cliff Hanger in August. That is a long time in between starts, and this will be a big test for this four-year-old, which has seven wins in 13 starts, but three have been in graded-stakes and those were Grade-3 races. Can Summer Frost make that jump to the next level?

Turallure finished fourth in his last start, which was the Bernard Baruch Handicap in August, and he hasn’t won since the Grade-1 Woodbine Mile, which was way back in September 2011. That is a span of nine races, and this six-year-old hasn’t placed in the top three in a graded-stakes race since then. Turallure hasn’t really cashed in for almost two years and he’ll be looked at as a horse betting underdog when he lines up on Saturday.

Willcox Inn won his last start, the Grade-3 Washington Park Handicap at the end of August, and that was his first non-turf start since April 2011. His last graded-stakes win on turf came in the Grade-3 Hawthorne Derby in October 2011, so his horse betting odds probably won’t be that great, although finishing second to Skyring in the Dixie Stakes could persuade a few players to wager on him.

Winning Prize is a rookie compared to the rest of the field, but that is because he is from Argentina. This is just his second career start in the United States and first in a graded-stakes race. He won an allowance race in August in his debut on American soil, but he could find out that it is a major step up in competition when you get to a graded-stakes event, especially a Grade-1 race. Still, keep an eye on him.

Finally, Wise Dan is the defending champion at this event and should be the horse betting favorite, and for good reason. This six-year-old has made 25 starts, winning 18 times, and 14 of those have come in graded-stakes events. It doesn’t seem to matter what surface or type of race it is, Wise Dan rises to the occasion and he has won 12 of his last 13 starts, including most recently in the Grade-1 Woodbine Mile. He is looking to go on and defend his title in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

How It Will Play Out

It would be fun to pick a horse outside of Wise Dan, with Silver Max and Handsome Mike pushing. But Wise Dan is the class of the field and he should be your online betting pick on Saturday.
