Woodward Stakes Betting – Mucho Macho Man Beats Out An Excellent Field

Posted by on 8/29/2013 7:42:53 PM

Sports betting players won’t find a much better non-Triple Crown or Breeders’ Cup field than the Grade-1 Woodward Stakes this Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. From top to bottom, this is a race in which any of the seven entrants could end up winning it all in this 1 1/8 mile race on dirt, and picking a winner will be a very tough decision. However, our winner is a horse that always puts himself in position to win the race and this time he’ll pull it off as Mucho Macho Man will beat the field to the finish line this weekend.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, August 31st, post time TBA
Where: Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY
Pick: Mucho Macho Man

(All horses officially entered as of Wednesday, August 28th)

Alpha has gone downhill since winning the Grade-1 Travers Stakes in 2012 at Saratoga, failing to finish better than fourth in six starts. He also finished 12th in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic and some horse betting sharps have probably wondered if he is/was/has been injured. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has entered the four-year-old colt in two straight handicap races, and this could be Alpha’s last big shot in a major Grade-1 flat race.

Fort Larned has run four straight handicap races since winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic, winning one, but he has finished fifth or sixth in the other three starts. This five-year-old has been put on track for the Classic once again and trainer Ian Wilkes could enter him into the Grade-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup as well, but he’ll need to put in a solid effort on Saturday at Saratoga Springs.

Flat Out is the first of two entrants under trainer William Mott, whose win with To Honor And Serve last year was his third in the Woodward, but his first since back-to-back victories with Cigar in 1995 and 1996. Flat Out has won two of his last three starts, the Grade-3 Westchester in April and the Grade-2 Suburban Handicap last month. This seven-year-old has won back-to-back Jockey Club Gold Cups and has finished in the top five of the last two Breeders’ Cup Classic, so he’ll get some attention from horse betting players.

Paynter has started eight races, winning half of them and even though three have been either maiden or allowance races, the other came in the Grade-1 Haskell Invitational. Only once in these eight starts has he finished lower than second, and that was a fourth in the Grade-1 Santa Anita Derby last year. This four-year-old will be looking to give trainer Bob Baffert his first win in the Woodward.

Mucho Macho Man came in second behind To Honor And Serve In last year’s Woodward and then followed it up with a second behind Fort Larned in the Classic, and this is a very consistent horse that finished in the top seven of all three Triple Crown races in 2012. He is coming off back-to-back third-place finishes in the ungraded Criminal Type and the Grade-1 Whitney Handicap, and it doesn’t matter what type of race it is, it always seems like this five-year-old is always in the mix. Trainer Katherine Ritvo would love to add her name to the list of winners in this prestigious race.

Ron The Greek is the second of Mott’s horses, and like Mucho Macho Man, he always seems to be near the front of any race he runs. He won four times in 2012 and finished fourth in the Classic, then won the ungraded Sunshine Millions Classic to start this year. Since then, he has finished either third or fourth in four consecutive races (three of them were handicap races) and a win this weekend would push him towards another appearance in the Classic.

Successful Dan came in second in the Whitney Handicap after a fourth in the Grade-1 Stephen Foster Handicap while he started off the year with a victory in the Grade-3 Ben Ali Stakes. He has never won a Grade-1 race, but Successful Dan does have four graded-stakes victories under his belt and even though some may call him a horse betting longshot here, it wouldn’t be that surprising at all if this seven-year-old was the first to the finish line.

How It Will Play Out

There isn’t a lot between these horses in a loaded field, but the nod goes to Mucho Macho Man with our online betting pick.
