Faster than a speeding bullet will be the adage of the day when the Breeders’ Cup Sprint field is unleashed as most astute handicappers know that a horse can’t have a misstep if a victory is in order in this race.

There are a few tidbits that players should be aware of when handicapping this race.

Since 1984, the favorite has only won the Sprint 23% of the time. The most money has been made in the superfecta with that average exotic paying nearly $18,000. California-based runners have won this race in 6 of the last 8 years and although the rail is seldom the place to be, it has not been bad in the Sprint.

Since 2001 after 12 renewals, 5 runners finished in the exacta with a pair of winners.

Secret Circle is out to defend his title in this race. Last year he was wide every step of the way in this race but held it together over a 16-1 shot that shipped in from Keeneland. He was off for about 8 months before his return in the SA Sprint Championship and was far from disgraced when posting a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. He also had just one prep before last year’s Sprint so there is a game plan in place. He will be trying to win his 3rd Breeders’ Cup race and should be a handful.

Rich Tapestry is a Hong Kong flash that made a huge splash in his U.S. debut beating Secret Circle. He was fully extended and only beat 4 foes but he will be trying to win his 8th race in his 28th start and he has beaten some big fields in the past.

Palace thrived at Saratoga this summer winning a pair of Grade 1 races. He landed on the rail last time and just could not quicken in time but he seems to have found his best stride at 5.

Private Zone opened up the year with a troubled 4th on the turf, a surface he was debuting on. He came back in clever fashion winning the Vosburgh by a neck. He also won the Vosburgh last year by a neck but then was very dull in the BC Sprint when just a brief threat.

Indianapolis has made no mistakes so far. He came from pretty far back in his debut, and then won his next pair after sitting second early on. As one would expect being trained by Bob Baffert, he has worked quickly since making it 3 for 3. He posted a best of the morning 1:10 2/5 gate drill on October 20 and will get tested for class in this edition of the Sprint.

Reneesgotzip may try to beat the boys here. Speed is her game, but she can sit just off the lead and still succeed. She has been expertly managed and has trained forwardly since earning a career best 106 Beyer at Del Mar.

Bakken will be trying to get revenge in this race as his only poor effort came in the Malibu at Santa Anita in 2013. He was a facile winner last time in a weak field but has the speed to contend early and often.
