BC Turf Early Preview

Posted by on 10/15/2014 10:50:19 PM

Only the strong survive going a mile and a half but the handicappers that will have to weed out the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Halloween will have a variety of good options to choose from this year.

Last season 2 horses in the race were coming off events in Europe and they ran one/two.

This year’s BC Turf opened up in a big way when it was announced on Monday that Wise Dan has injured his ankle and will not make the race. That gives false hope to some but real hope to others.

Telescope is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who has won the BC Turf 4 times and he has been on course and training for this particular event since August. In that August race he was beaten by the great Australia, who is a multiple Group 1 winner and over $3.4 million earner.

Only serious horses are in the money every single time and not only has Telescope done that, he has won 4 of his 10 starts and was 2 nd 5 times.

Main Sequence is on a flat-out roll as he has won three consecutive Grade 1 races at 3 different venues. He overcame trouble in each of his last 3 races. He broke slowly in his stateside debut, hit the gate in the next and was off awkwardly last time when earning a career best 104 Beyer Speed Figure taking the Turf Classic.

Flintshire is trained by the world-class conditioner Andre Fabre and is fresh from a second in the Arc de Triomphe while beating 18 rivals to the wire. Before that race, Flintshire was second in a Group 2 but 2 of his 3 career victories have come at a mile and a half.

Seek Again can be his own worst enemy at times because he breaks poorly at times. He has never been a mile and a half but he proved his worth when 2nd beaten just a head to Wise Dan in May.

Imagining was pushed along last time but could not hold off Main Sequence. In the exacta in 13 of 19 in his career with 8 wins, he is trained by Kentucky Derby winning trainer Shug McGaughey. Although he has never won at a mile and a half, he has shown great versatility in his career.

Hardest Core burst onto the American scene with a clever win in the Arlington Million with a 103 Beyer. He has won at a number of different tracks, has been able to win when placed anywhere in a race and he is repeatedly proven off a layoff.

Magician will be out to defend his Turf title but he has not been up to his old tricks this year. He came from 2nd to last in the Turf last year and popped at 12-1. Don’t be shocked if he pulls another rabbit out of his hat.

Bettors have to pay attention to race shape in the Turf. You really don’t want to be near the lead in most years. The first three early leaders in last year’s Turf finished 11th, 7th and dead last.

The early lean in the Turf is to find a European with a bit of value and go for the jugular.
