Bold Ruler Handicap Preview

About the Race and Track

Speed will be the focus in the Grade 3 seven-furlong Bold Ruler Stakes at Belmont today and handicappers will have to try to determine if there is a lone horse that has the needed velocity to win or if a duel will occur and a closer gets the chips.

A sweet 7-pack goes to the post.

The underrated Phone Trick won this race in 1986. Richard Dutrow Jr. trained King’s Swan andLite the Fuse both and both won the Bold Ruler. Kelly Kip won back-to-back renewals of this race and last year Clearly Now got the job done.

Clearly Now was coming off a second in a stakes in Philly before getting the garden 3-hole trip in the Bold Ruler last year to win going away with a juicy 109 Beyer Speed Figure.

A Longshot With Some Value: Salutos Amigos

Salutos Amigos should be fit enough, has won for this rider Cornelio Velasquez and he should sit a nice stalk and pounce trip.

The Pick: River Rocks

Confrontation has won 5 of 8 in his career but was crushed in his only stakes try. In that effort last time he pressed the issue briefly but faded badly to run dead last.

Romansh has repeatedly won Grade 3 races but has been going long of late. His lone win this year was by a neck going 9 furlongs on the inner strip atAqueduct. Apparently not much of a workhorse, he has only drilled once since running 8th in the Grade 1 Woodward and he could find himself behind the 8 ball turning for the wire.

Sage Valley is a double winner at this demanding distance. He has the speed to lead and win but he can also sit just off the pace and perform. He proved he belongs in this league by winning the Grade 3 Marvin last year at Saratoga.

Salutos Amigos has the 2 races to draw from now but must find a way to turn the tables on his archrival River Rocks. Far from disgraced in the Grade 1 Vosburgh last time when beaten just 2 lengths. He has also won at Belmont and has succeeded going 7 furlongs.

Joe Tess has one way to go; and that’s to the front and then try to extend his margin. He has trained solidly for this in Jersey but he has lost in all of his stakes attempts.

River Rocks ran well in defeat last time when 2nd beaten a length in the Grade 2 Kelso. Drawn outside the other major speed, he has the speed to compete early but he can also sit just off the pace and succeed.

Cease fired last time, just had to settle for second. He cuts back this time after running second in a route and in his last cut back situation, the gelding only beat 3 to the wire.

The switch to Joel Rosario could prove the difference for River Rocks. He has won 3 of 4 this year, could have just been pushing the envelope in the miler last time and he has drilled decently since that effort.

Key this racer on top.
