Cigar Mile Handicap Betting - Secret Circle Rolls To The Winner's Circle

Posted by on 11/26/2014 7:31:19 PM

The Grade-1 Cigar Mile Handicap comes to you from Aqueduct in Queens, and it is one of the bigger late-year races you'll find in the United States. It is run over a mile on dirt, and it features a hefty purse at $500,000, so there is a lot at stake when the field heads to the gate on Saturday. Last year, Flat Out became the oldest thoroughbred to win this race at seven years old.

There are a lot of good sprint horses in this field and players will have a difficult pick to make. However, Secret Circle is always at the front of the pack when he races and he is a very good finisher, so he would be a smart pick to make this weekend at Aqueduct.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, November 29th, post time 12:00 PM ET

Where: Aqueduct Racetrack, Queens, NY

Pick: Secret Circle

Big Business has made eight starts in 2014, finishing in the top three in all of them with a pair of wins. However, both of those wins have come in allowance races and while a second-place finish at the Grade-1 Forego in August is encouraging, it is still his only start in a graded-stakes event this year. You'll probably be able to find this New York-bred horse at good value.

Bourbon Courage is coming off a fourth at the Breeders' Cup Sprint, which followed an allowance win in October. That was his first start since May, so he should be well-rested and Bourbon Courage is an intriguing option for bettors on Saturday.

Itsmyluckyday has had an eventful year, which opened with a fourth at the Grade-2 Gulfstream Park Handicap in March. Since then, he has won four of six, include two graded-stakes races and his victory at the Grade-1 Woodward in August was a real eye-opener. He hasn't raced since finishing third at the Grade-2 Kelso Handicap in September, but Itsmyluckyday should be one of the favorites this weekend.

Noble Moon hasn't finished inside the top three since winning the Grade-2 Jerome in January, although all four of the starts have been graded-stakes events. However, three of the four have been 1 1/8 miles, so Noble Moon could be stronger if he only has to run a mile. Keep an eye on this thoroughbred.

Private Zone hails from Canada, and he finished second to Flat Out in this race last year. However, his first race in 2014 came in September as he finished fourth at the Grade-3 Turf Monster Handicap, then won the Grade-1 Vosburgh and finished with a third at the Breeders' Cup Sprint. This is another horse that will probably offer some good value for bettors.

Regally Ready is an interesting choice with with five wins in eight starts this year. However, they have all come in allowance or non-graded events. In his three graded-stakes starts, Regally Ready has a third, a seventh and an eighth. Can he bring his speed against a top field such as this? We will see on Saturday.

Secret Circle has to be considered a favorite as he has finished in the top three in each of his 12 starts with seven wins. While he failed to defend his win in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Sprint (his second overall after winning the Juvenile back in 2012) by finishing second to Work All Week earlier this month, Secret Circle is a quality horse that will be a factor at Aqueduct.

Transparent has never finished higher than fourth in three graded-stakes starts and even though he is coming off a win, it was an allowance race; in fact, his three victories have come in a pair of allowance wins and he needed six tries to break his maiden. Don't expect much from Transparent, although crazy things can always happen in the world of high-stakes thoroughbred horse racing.

Vyjack rounds out the field and he is coming off a win at the Kelso, and he has improved after a couple of poor finishes in the summer in big-time graded-stakes races. After struggling in the Triple Crown races last year, he looks more comfortable as a sprint horse and he should be around the front on Saturday.

How It Will Play Out

Secret Circle has consistently raced at a high level and he'll add another win to his resume on Saturday to likely wrap up his 2014 slate.
