Cotillion Stakes Betting – Joint Return Pulls Off A Slight Upset On Saturday

Posted by on 9/16/2014 9:00:28 PM

The Grade-1 Cotillion Stakes is one of the top races for three-year-old fillies. A good result could land a filly in the Breeders’ Cup later on, and there is a purse of $1,000,000 for this event, which is run over 1 1/16 miles on dirt.

Untapable and Stopchargingmaria will likely take most of the attention, but Joint Return will steal the show and snatch the win on Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, September 20th, 4:45 PM ET

Where : Parx Racing, Philadelphia Park, Bensalem, PA

Pick : Joint Return

Cassatt broke her maiden on her second try in January, then she proceeded to win the Grade-3 Monmouth Oaks last month upon her return to the track after seven months off. She didn’t look rusty at all, and did well enough to be considered one of the top three-year-old fillies in this field. However, this will be a massive test for her, although her win at the Monmouth proved that she could cover the 1 1/16-mile distance.

House Rules opened the season strong by finally breaking her maiden on her fourth try, then she finished second in a pair of Grade-2 events. However, a fourth and a sixth followed in two Grade-1 races, then she won an allowance race at Saratoga in August. You don’t know what you are going to get from this filly, so House Rules is going to be a hot-or-cold pick on Saturday; there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground with this filly.

Joint Return has been hot, winning the non-graded Our Mims in June, then she finished second in the Grade-2 Delaware Oaks in July and the Grade-1 Alabama last month. You might be able to get her for some good value, so keep an eye on Joint Return’s betting odds this weekend, because she is a very intriguing pick. She has run 1 1/16 miles three times, coming away with a pair of wins and a second-place finish.

Jojo Warrior won the Grade-2 Summertime Oaks in June, but hasn’t been on the track since, so you have to wonder about rust. However, the Summertime Oaks was run at the same distance as the Cotillion, so that is encouraging, so Jojo Warrior could be worth a look as well. A few breaks here and there, and she could end up in the winner’s circle on Saturday.

Little Alexis broke her maiden in her first try back in February, then returned to the track six months later to finish third in the Grade-1 Test last month. However, she has never run more than the seven furlongs she had to cover in the Test, so the jump to 1 1/16 miles is going to be something to watch for fans of this filly. The speed seems to be there and was still there after her hiatus, but can she carry it over 1 1/16 miles?

Stopchargingmaria rolled to the win at the Alabama for her third victory in a row, and they have all been graded-stakes events: the Grade-2 Black-Eyed Susans in May, the Grade-1 Coaching Club American Oaks in July and then the Alabama. She is going to be one of the favorites to watch on Saturday and she is used to going up against strong fields: outside of her maiden, each of Stopchargingmaria’s nine starts have been graded-stakes events and she has finished in the top three seven times, winning five races.

Sweet Reason won the Grade-1 Test for her second win in a row after the Grade-1 Acorn in June, and she finished a respectable fourth at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last November, so she has the speed and the talent. This is another horse where you might find some good value and she could definitely beat the field to the wire on Saturday.

Untapable was rolling along with four straight wins (all of which were graded-stakes events) until she finished fifth at the Haskell Invitational, so maybe racing with the colts wasn’t a good idea. When it comes to the fillies, she is one of the best in the business and will probably be the favorite on Saturday.

Vero Amore has a good chance to bring up the rear after a 10th-place finish at the non-graded Tenski last month. It was her third straight result of eighth or worse, and she will need a lot to go right to just finish in the top three this weekend.

How It Will Play Out

There are faster horses in the field, but Joint Return is riding a wave of good form and she will take it to the finish line this weekend.
