Delaware Handicap Betting – Princess of Sylmar Gets Back On Track

Posted by on 7/10/2014 9:48:52 PM

The Delaware Handicap will have a new champion in 2014 as Royal Delta decided not to come back and go for the three-peat. This Grade-1 race is run on dirt over a distance of 1 ¼ miles, and it is only for fillies and mares aged three years and older, with a purse of $750,000.

Royal Delta ran this race for two straight years and has since retired, leaving room for a new horse to step up in her place. Princess of Sylmar actually defeated Royal Delta last year and she looks like the next great female horse. She will roll over the field on Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, July 12th, post time TBA

Where : Delaware Park Race Track, Wilmington, DE

Pick : Princess of Sylmar

Belle Gallantey has made 32 starts in her career, but she only made her graded-stakes debut in his last outing, a fifth in the Grade-1 Ogden Phipps Handicap. She ran in allowance and claiming races until that race, and the result in the Ogden Phipps was actually quite good, but you shouldn’t expect a whole lot from this five-year-old mare. She just doesn’t have enough races against a high level of competition.

Bryan’s Jewel will be making her 19th starts and just her fourth in a graded-stakes race, but she did win the Grade-3 Obeah last June. She is coming off back-to-back third-place results in a pair of non-graded events, the Winter Melody and the Justakiss, so Bryan’s Jewel does have a little bit of momentum going into the Delaware Handicap, but can this six-year-old keep it going on Saturday? She just has to be more consistent.

Flashy American is making her fifth consecutive start in a graded-stakes event, and she won the Grade-3 Sixty Sails Handicap in April, but she failed to finish higher than third in the other four starts. She recently finished third in the Grade-2 Fleur De Lis in a decent field, but the five-year-old Flashy American will need to find another gear to take the top spot in this race. Like Bryan’s Jewel, this is a horse plagued by inconsistency and you never know which version is going to show up to the track.

Gamay Noir finished third behind Flashy American at the Sixty Sails Handicap, then followed it up by winning this year’s edition of the Obeah last month. This four-year-old filly also won the Grade-3 Rampart in March, so she is going to be a force to be reckoned with on Saturday. She didn’t do much as a three-year-old, winning an allowance race, but she ended the year with an 11th-place finish at the non-graded South Beach Stakes. But Gamay Noir is finding another level to go as a four-year-old and if any horse is going to upset the probable favorite, it is her.

Molly Morgan has been on a roll as well, finishing second in the Grade-1 La Trioenne Stakes and then she won the Fleur De Lis. She was up and down as a four-year-old, but she seems to be coming into her own at five and a win in the Delaware Handicap would really vault her up the ranks in terms of older female horses. This is another thoroughbred that seems to be getting better as she matures, and Molly Morgan will be looking to push the probable favorite as far as she can.

However, Princess of Sylmar will likely come to Delaware as the favorite after finishing second in the Odgen Phipps. She has a very stellar resume with nine wins in 13 starts, along with a pair of second-place results and in 2013, she won four Grade-1 races in a row, including the Kentucky Oaks and a huge win over Royal Delta at the Beldame in September. However, she ended her three-year-old campaign with a disappointing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and was given a few months off. She could be gearing up to storm into her four-year-old season and a win on Saturday would be a boost to a horse that people expect a lot of big things from.

How It Will Play Out

Princess of Sylmar appears to have shaken off the rust from her five months off, and she should dominate en route to the winner’s circle in the Delaware Handicap. She could be in line for a start in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic later in the year, and this would help.

Delaware Handicap Betting Pick: Princess Sylmar
