Diana Handicap Stakes Betting – Somali Lemonade Tastes Sweet In New York

Posted by on 7/17/2014 10:41:52 PM

The Diana Handicap has been held every year since 1939, so it has a long and storied history behind it. It is a race for fillies and mares that are three years old and up, and it is 1 1/8 miles long, run on a turf surface at Saratoga Race Course. It is also a Grade-1 race, and there is a purse of $500,000.

Saturday’s race has a very good and deep field with a few horses that have a legitimate shot to win, but Somali Lemonade has been pretty steady in 2014 and held up against a strong field in her last start. You should be able to find her for some good value as well, so take a long look at her when you make your picks for the weekend.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, July 19th, post time TBA

Where : Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY

Pick : Somali Lemonade

Abaco has finished fourth or better in each of her last seven starts, including a second at the Grade-2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes in May. Her last win came in November when she took the Grade-3 Cardinal Handicap, and this six-year-old mare has improved with each start in 2014.

Alterite hasn’t raced since the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare, where she finished third. She had results of first, second and third in her first three races on American soil, but will the layoff hurt this four-year-old French filly? She will be looking to make it back-to-back for foreign horses after Laughing (from Ireland) won last year.

Caroline Thomas won an allowance race last month, but prior to that, she finished fifth at the Sheepshead Bay and hadn’t finished better than third since winning the Grade-2 Lake Placid last August. This four-year-old needs to find another gear this weekend.

Discreet Marq should be one of the favorites despite finishing fourth at the Grade-1 Just A Game last month. It was her first finish outside of first or second since New Year’s Day of 2013, a span of nine races, and it was just her second start in 2014. This four-year-old should be better on Saturday.

Emollient finished second at the Grade-1 Gamely Stakes in May, and has been off the racetrack ever since. She has finished between first and fourth in her last five outings, so this four-year-old should be in the mix.

Solid Appeal won the Grade-2 Nassau Stakes two months ago, her second straight win in that event. It was her first top-three finish since winning the Grade-2 Dance Smartly last July, and this five-year-old could be rounding into form at just the right time as we head into the second half of the year.

Somali Lemonade came in third at the Just A Game and she has now finished in the top three in all four 2014 starts. This includes an allowance win and at the Grade-2 Gallorette Handicap, and the Just A Game had a very good field lining up. You could find this five-year-old for some excellent value on Saturday.

Stephanie’s Kitten finished fifth in the Just A Game, her second start of the year. An eighth-place result at the Grade-1 Jenny Wiley in April was her first since finishing third in the Diana Handicap last year, and there were high hopes for the five-year-old after she won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff Turf Mile last May. She has a long way to go, but Stephanie’s Kitten still has some speed and could end up stealing the show on Saturday.

Strathnaver hails from Great Britain and she finished second to Coffee Clique at the Just A Game, but she has been racing in the United States for basically her entire career, so it won’t be a shock to her. This five-year-old showed a lot in the Just A Game, but she has been quite inconsistent and she has to prove that result wasn’t a fluke.

Tannery has made two starts in 2014, winning the non-graded Miss Liberty in May before finishing second at the Grade-2 New York Stakes in June. She has plenty of experience in graded-stakes races and this will be her sixth start in a Grade-1 event, but she has yet to win one. Keep an eye on her on Saturday.

How It Will Play Out

Somali Lemonade has been solid this year and she’ll beat the field to the wire to take the 2014 edition of the Diana Handicap.
