BC Juvenile Turf Early Preview

Posted by on 10/13/2014 10:21:16 PM

Put improving youngsters on the grass in a full field going a mile and anything can happen and that may be the case facing handicappers this year in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Halloween at Santa Anita.

Last year Europeans were responsible for the Juvenile Turf exacta. The winner Outstrip was coming off a third in a Group 1 at Newmarket while the place horse Giovanni Boldini was 2 for 3 going into the Cup and was coming off a win in Ireland.

Trained by Kenny McPeek, Lawn Ranger was made to be a runner as a sibling to Georgie’s Angel, who took a Grade 3 in the short career. Lawn Ranger was dead short in this debut, broke his maiden coming away late and then had the coming out party in the Grade 3 Bourbon with a career best 74 Beyer Speed Figure.

Luck of the Kitten has a major advantage with a win over the Santa Anita course. He was rated on the lead in his Saratoga debut and had to settle for second. He proved he could ship successfully when he won his next start in Chicago and he showed career speed at Anita in the Zuma Beach with an 84 Beyer. The colt has a right to have a nice career as kin to triple stakes winner Empire Builder and if you go deep in his pedigree players will find millionaire State Shinto.

Everything from Chad Brown’s stable must be respected and Startup Nation is no exception. The son of Temple City came from 10 lengths off the pace to win his debut and then repeated in the Grade 2 With Anticipation despite lugging in late. The early pace was slow in his next start and he just ran out of real estate when fourth in the Grade 3 Pilgrim.

Happy Day’s Fonzie would love Toocoolforschool and so may some players if he makes it to Anita from England. Troubled in his debut, he won next out, lost by a head in a Group 3, and was 2nd again, and then freaked by 7 lengths at the end of September.

Conquest Typhoon posted a clever win the Summer, proved it was no fluke running a solid second the Grey and should be a handful in this race. Connections thought enough of this $330,000 purchase to open his career in a sprint stakes and he ran well to be beaten a length and a half. He was over 5 clear in his next when beaten a neck and took to the yielding course in the Summer. He was pretty much dueled into submission in the Grey but still held together well.

Conquest Typhoon’s pedigree is solid. His dam was a double winner and the dam is kin to a near $250,000 earner in Teewee’s Hope. Conquest Typhoon’s lone sibling to race, Bubbles to the Top, earned $275,000 in his career and the racer is in the good hands of Mark Casse.

Imperia came up a neck short in the debut but then broke his maiden in the Pilgrim. His class is directly derived from his dam Cocoa Beach, who won multiple stakes and banked over $1.7 million.

Sure, this is just a sampling, but you have to start somewhere with a puzzle like the Juvenile Turf.
