Evangeline Downs Turf Sprint Stakes Betting – Snappy Girl Snaps Up The Victory

Posted by on 6/19/2014 12:14:51 AM

This is the first edition of the Evangeline Downs Turf Sprint Stakes, which carries a purse of $300,000. It is a non-graded event for now, and it is run on turf obviously, over a distance of five furlongs, which is just over a half-mile and horses three years and up.

In a surprisingly decent field for a first-time event, look at a filly like Snappy Girl to get to the winner’s circle.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, June 21st, post time 5:50 PM ET

Where : Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel, Lafayette, LA

Pick : Snappy Girl

Berlino Di Tiger hails from Brazil and has just six starts as a six-year-old, all on turf. He won the Grade-3 Twin Spires Turf Sprint last May, but in his other five starts, he has a best result of sixth and in his last outing in March, he finished 11th. That win earns him a little respect and credit, but it’ll take a mssive effort for Berlino Di Tiger to win this race.

Gantry will be one of the favorites even though he finished sixth in the Grade-3 Shakertown in April. Prior to that, the seven-year-old gelding had finished first or second in eight straight starts, winning three. However, just six of his 22 starts have come on turf and even though he has two wins, he also has finishes of fifth or worse.

Heitai has won four of his last five starts, taking the non-graded Louisiana Legends Sprint last month, but he has never raced on turf. It’ll be interesting to see how he takes to that surface after running his first nine races on dirt, and this four-year-old colt will be one to watch, one way or another.

Lemon Drop Dream is also four years old and he is coming off a third-place result in the Grade-3 Maryland Sprint Handicap after winning the Grade-3 Count Fleet, but he has run six in a row on dirt after making four of his first five starts on turf, and he has never finished third in any of those races, all maiden events. Is turf really his surface? We will see on Saturday.

Redhotrush has made one of his 12 starts on turf, and it ended up being his worst as he finished ninth in the non-graded Louisiana Legends Starter Stakes in June of 2012. He has won a maiden/claiming rce and an allowance race, but the rest of his results leave a lot to be desired, so don’t expect much from this seven-year-old gelding.

Snappy Girl will represent the females as this four-year-old filly has won all three of her career starts, most recently in the non-graded Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle last month. She also won the non-graded Tellike on turf last month, so this won’t be her first time on that surface and you can get her for good value.

Solar Charge had made 11 starts, with four coming on turf and he has three second-place results and a fourth in those allowance races. He has two wins, one in a maiden race and the other in the non-graded Spirit Of Texas Stakes, both on dirt. This will also be his first start since March of 2013, his only competitive race in almost two years.

Sum Of The Parts has 20 starts under his belt and those include some big races, including three straight starts in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint or Sprint events, coming away with finishes of sixth, fourth and 12th. He has made four starts in a row on turf, winning the non-graded Bonapaw and the Champion Energy Services, but then he came in fourth in the non-graded Colonel Power and sixth in the Twin Spires. Which edition of this five-year-old shows up on Saturday?

Unitas has made one start on turf, his debut in September 2010, and he finished sixth in the non-graded Sunday Silence. Since then, he has one win in 12 starts, which came in July of last year in the non-graded Louisiana Legends Sprint and he finished fifth in his defense of his title last month. Still, keep an eye on this six-year-old gelding.

Whiskey Bravo rounds out the field and 11 of his 13 starts have been in either maiden (which he has yet to break), maiden/claiming, allowance or claiming races. He did win a claiming race in his last start in March and that was on turf, so that is slightly encouraging, but not enough to wager on this four-year-old colt.

How It Will Play Out

Snappy Girl wins it for the ladies in a slight upset in the inaugural edition of this race.
