Fourstardave Handicap Betting – Silver Max Romps To The Wire In New York

Posted by on 8/7/2014 8:36:07 PM

The Fourstardave Handicap is a Grade-2 race run over a distance of a mile, and it has been run at Saratoga since 1985. The purse is $500,000 and the race is designated for horses three years old and up, and the thoroughbred for which this event is named after won it in 1990 and 1991; he is buried at Saratoga as well.

Wise Dan won’t be back for a run at a three-peat, so the race is there for the taking and Silver Max will step up to the challenge on Saturday.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, August 9th, post time TBA

Where : Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY

Pick : Silver Max

Dorsett is coming off a fourth-place result at the Grade-2 Nijinksy at Woodbine, and he has now failed to crack the top three in six graded-stakes events, although he has never finished worse than sixth, either. He just doesn’t seem to have that extra gear to challenge the top horses in his field, and this will be the first time since his first maiden attempt in December 2012 that this four-year-old will run just a mile, which could work out in his favor. He also has John Velasquez tentatively scheduled to ride him, and Velasquez has won this race eight times, including the last three years running.

Grand Arch has never finished outside the top three in 13 starts, although just three of those races were graded-stakes events and he has finished third in all three of those. He recently won the non-graded King Edward at Woodbine in June, and that is a race run over a distance of a mile and this five-year-old gelding has run exclusively on turf for his whole career. You might be able to get some good value on Grand Arch, so take a long look at him.

Jack Milton has performed well in a few graded-stakes races, such as third-places results at the Grade-1 Secretariat Stakes and the Jamaica Handicap, but he has also struggled with a sixth at the Grade-1 Hollywood Derby and recently, a fifth at the Grade-1 Shoemaker Mile in June. However, Jack Milton won the Grade-3 Poker in May, so you never know what you are going to get from this four-year-old colt and that can be scary.

Sayaad has won three races in a row after the non-graded Forbidden Apple last month, but that was his first start since October of last year and among this trio of wins, there are two non-graded stakes wins and an allowance victory, so don’t get excited. In his lone graded-stakes appearance, Sayaad finished fifth at the Grade-3 Hill Prince last June, so it isn’t like he was setting the race track on fire before his hiatus, Don’t expect too much from this four-year-old.

Seek Again is an intriguing choice because of his recent track record. Has last three starts have all come in Grade-1 events and he has finished in the top three in all three, winning the Hollywood Derby in December, then finishing second in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and third in the Manhattan Handicap. However, there were five months between the Hollywood Derby and the Woodford, so you have to wonder if the layoff had a major effect on him. This is a massive race for this four-year-old, who is being pointed towards the Breeders’ Cup Mile in November and in his last race in a one-mile event, Seek Again finished second last August in a non-graded event on a synthetic surface.

Silver Max will likely come into this race as the favorite and he has the most experience in the field with 24 starts, and after finishing second five times, he finally broke his maiden in January of 2012. When it comes to graded-stakes events, Silver Max has appeared in 14 of them, winning seven of them, including the Grade-1 Shadwell Turf Mile last October and the Grade-2 Firecracker Handicap in June. However, the Firecracker was his first race since finishing fourth at the Breeders’ Cup Mile in November, although he didn’t look rusty in his return to the track. This five-year-old has the resume and the pedigree, and he is usually around the front of the pack, so it is going to be tough to get past Silver Max on Saturday.

How It Will Play Out

Seek Again will give Silver Max a good run, but eventually the five-year-old colt will pull away and he could be en route to another appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
