Gold Cup at Santa Anita Betting – Clubhouse Ride Ends Game On Dude’s Gold Cup Reign

Posted by on 6/26/2014 10:40:50 PM

The Gold Cup used to be run at Hollywood Park, but the 76th edition will have a new home. With Hollywood Park closed for good, Santa Anita Park is now the home of this prestigious race for horses which are three years old and up, and this handicap race carries a purse of $750,000. It is a Grade-1 race, and to have this on their resume is a major boost to these horses.

Game On Dude has won the past two editions of the Gold Cup, and he has won at Santa Anita Park, so the change in venue won’t bother him. However, due to age (possibly) he hasn’t looked like the same horse that rolled over the competition in the past, although he is still dangerous. He’ll be a popular pick on Saturday and rightly so, but Clubhouse Ride has been racing well as of late and he should steal the show with a victory this weekend in what should be a fascinating race for everyone involved.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, June 28th, post time TBA

Where : Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA

Pick : Clubhouse Ride

Clubhouse Ride is coming off a huge win at the Grade-2 Californian last month in which he went up against a number of horses in this field, and it was his first win since winning the same race in 2013, a span of nine events. He finished fourth in this race last year, and this six-year-old always has the potential to be in the mix whenever he lines up at the gate.

Fury Kapcori had a winning streak stopped at four by finishing second to Clubhouse Ride at the Californian, although that streak is a little misleading. Two of those wins were in allowance races in January and February, then he won the non-graded Santana Mile in March, followed by the Grade-3 Precisionist Stakes in early May. It is encouraging that this four-year-old has been improving, so that is a good sign.

Game On Dude should be the odds-on favorite for this race in which he is going for the three-pear after winning in 2012 and 2013. This seven-year-old gelding started 2014 off slow with a fifth at the Grade-2 San Antonio Handicap in February, then he won the Grade-1 Santa Anita Handicap in March and then finished second in the Grade-2 Charles Town Classic. He doesn’t have the aura of invincibility he once did, but Game On Dude is still one of the best thoroughbreds in the United States, no matter what the age is.

Imperative had a massive bounce-back race after finishing seventh at the Santa Anita Handicap by winning the Charles Town Classic, , and it seems like this four-year-old is starting to come into his own. He has been brought along slowly and spent all of 2013 running in allowance and claiming races, and after spending most of his time on turf or a synthetic surface, he is starting to take to dirt, which could be trouble for the rest of the horse-racing world.

Lideris is making his debut in the United States, although he was bred in Kentucky, and he won his first start in Peru by taking the Grade-1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano in March. However, this four-year-old is about to learn that the level of competition in the United States is much higher than anywhere else, and he could end up at the back of the pack on Saturday.

Majestic Harbor finished third at the Californian after winning the Grade-3 Tokyo City Cup in March, and he came in fourth at the San Antonio Handicap, so he does have some speed and could be a darkhorse to watch this weekend. He doesn’t have a lot of miles on his legs for being six years old, so that could help him as well.

Salto Del Indio comes from Chile and there isn’t a lot known about this horse other than that he is four years old, this is his first race in the United States and he has made 13 of his 15 career starts on dirt, so that is a start. He will likely battle with Lideris in the race to avoid finishing last at Santa Anita.

How It Will Play Out

Game On Dude should be the favorite and would be the smart pick, but if you want a little value, look at Clubhouse Ride on Saturday.
