Jim Dandy Stakes Betting – Tonalist Rolls To Victory At Saratoga

Posted by on 7/24/2014 10:45:37 PM

The Jim Dandy Stakes is a Grade-2 event being held this Saturday at Saratoga in New York, and it has a storied history. This will be the 51st running of the event, and it has had a number of Triple Crown champions reach the winner’s circle in the past, such as Awesome Again, Bernardini, Street Sense and last year’s winner, Palace Malice. The race is 1 1/8 miles long, and it is run on dirt with a purse of $600,000.

This year’s winner is also a Triple Crown winner as Tonalist claimed the final jewel recently, and while some thought his win was a fluke, a dominant performance on Saturday would quiet a lot of his critics. Look for Tonalist to take this to the house this weekend and then head to the Travers Stakes next month.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, July 26th, post time TBA

Where : Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY

Pick : Tonalist

Commanding Curve almost pulled out a victory at the Kentucky Derby before fading to ninth at the Belmont Stakes, and he has been off since then, so the rest could have been good for this colt. He wasn’t much of a thought going into the Kentucky Derby as he needed four tries to break his maiden, but Commanding Curve is a possible darkhorse and seems to step up in big races.

Cousin Stephen broke his maiden on his second attempt, then finished fifth in an allowance race in January. He followed that up with a third at the Grade-3 Sam F. Davis Stakes in February, then a sixth at the Grade-2 Tampa Bay Derby back in March and he hasn’t raced since. Will he be rested or rusty? Either way, Cousin Stephen is probably a darkhorse on Saturday.

Kid Cruz has won four of his last five starts, but three of those came in non-graded-races and he finished eighth at the Preakness. Still, his win at the Grade-3 Dwyer earlier this month might persuade a few players to take a chance on this colt and he might surprise some people this weekend. He could be worth laying a little down.

Legend will definitely be a longshot as he needed four races to break his maiden, and even though he finished second in his last start, it came in the non-graded Easy Goer and he has never run a race longer than 1 1/16 miles, so this will be a bit of a stretch for this colt. Legend is probably out of his element in a race of this stature, but you never know how a horse will perform until they get out on the race track.

Tonalist will likely be the favorite for the Jim Dandy on Saturday after winning the Belmont to ruin California Chrome’s shot at the Triple Crown, but that was no fluke as Tonalist also won the Grade-2 Peter Pan to get into the Belmont. This horse has a lot of speed and as the Belmont showed, he has the stamina to run as long as he is needed to. He wasn’t on many players’ radar at the beginning of the Triple Crown season and he only ran in the Belmont, but Tonalist is going to be a factor this weekend, one way or another.

Ulanbator finished third at the Dwyer after coming in second at the Grade-3 Matt Winn in June, and this will be his first race in which he has run longer than 1 1/16 miles. This will definitely the biggest race of this colt’s career, but his handlers have brought him along slowly and he could be the best bet out of all the darkhorses on Saturday. Keep an eye on Ulanbator.

Wicked Strong rounds out the field and outside of a ninth-place result at the Grade-2 Holy Bull Stakes in January, he has been quite consistent and around the front of the pack. He finished third at the Grade-2 Remsen in November, he won the Grade-1 Wood Memorial in April, then finished fourth at both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont. If Tonalist is going to be the favorite, Wicked Strong could be the colt to challenge him this weekend.

How It Will Play Out

Kid Cruz is worth a look and Wicked Strong could make a push, but in the end, it looks like Tonalist is the strongest horse in the field and should continue his excellent run into the second half of 2014.

Jim Dandy Stakes Betting Pick: Tonalist
