Jockey Club Gold Cup Betting - Moreno Reaches The Wire First At Belmont Park

Posted by on 9/25/2014 10:06:10 PM

Big Cazanova hails from Argentina and will be making his graded-stakes debut on American soil. He has run five maiden/allowances races in the United States in 2014, finishing in the top three in all five and winning two, but this will be a huge step up in competition for this colt.

Last Gunfighter has struggled mightily this summer, finishing fifth or worse in three straight graded-stakes events. He is still rated highly, but Last Gunfighter needs a win or at least a solid performance to stay on track for the Breeders' Cup Classic in November.

Long River is in the same boat with for consecutive results of fifth or seventh in graded-stakes races. Hopes were high for him after he finished second at the Grade-3 Excelsior in March, but they have since vanished. Still, a win would be a huge boot for Long River.

Micromanage came in third in the Grade-3 Greenwood Cup at the beginning of the month, and he should offer some good value for players. A seventh-place run at the Grade-2 Suburban Handicap in July might scare some off, but he also finished second at the Grade-2 Brooklyn Handicap a month prior.

Moreno could be another value pick with a win and two runner-up results in graded-stakes races, and his win came in the Grade-1 Whitney Handicap in August. He is definitely one to keep an eye on this weekend.

Prayer For Relief finished third at the Grade-1 Woodward and has been hanging around the front of the pack all summer. This is another horse with some value to him, and with a prayer, he could steal the show on Saturday.

Speak Logistics will be a longshot as he has finished fifth or worse in his last five starts, all of which were non-graded or allowance races. In a field this strong, Speak Logistics will probably be overmatched.

Stephanoatsee came in fifth at the Woodward and he also might be biting off more than he can chew on Saturday. That was his best result in his last four graded-stakes starts, which isn't encouraging.

Tonalist followed up his win at the Belmont Stakes by coming in second at the Grade-2 Jim Dandy and then third at the Grade-1 Travers? Was the Belmont a one-off? Saturday will be a test to see if that was a fluke for Tonalist.

V.E. Day won the Travers on that day, which earned him a look at this race, so another horse has a show-and-prove agenda on Saturday. He has won four races in a row, but this will be the bigger test yet.

Wicked Strong finished second at the Travers after winning the Jim Dandy, so he has to be considered a favorite here. He has been fourth or better in his last five starts, all of which have been graded-stakes events and two were Triple Crown races.

Zivo rounds out the field after a fourth at the Woodward, which followed six straight wins, including the Suburban. If this horse isn't on your radar on Saturday, he should be.

How It Will Play Out

In an absolutely loaded field in which any number of horses could finish first, take Moreno for the win and an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic in November.
