About the Race and Track

A new era of racing will be ushered in at Del Mar this fall meet with the inaugural stand at this time of the year and for handicappers that prefer wagering on synthetic surfaces, this will be the last chance for romance in California for racing other than dirt.

The first running of the $75,000 Kathryn Crosby Stakes kicks off the feature presentations and it’s a mile turf race for fillies and mare 3-year-olds and upward.

A full field has passed the entry process and the race is totally wide-open.

A Longshot With Some Value: Wishing Gate

Wishing Gate can be placed anywhere in the race and still perform and she should be a hint of a price.

The Pick: Kitten’s Point

Bee Brave graduated at this very distance in January and won over this Del Mar course in late August. She overcame trouble that day coming from 5 th of 7 in the field. Connections were pushing the envelope last time trying her at a mile and a quarter.

Queen of The Sand has also succeeded on this course but she was beaten by Bee Brave last time and will need plenty of help up front.

Warren’s Veneda could have just needed her turf sprint last time. She has some class to draw from as she won a $100,000 stakes last year and she was only beaten a half-length here in the summer in the $103,000 Osunitas.

Burning Arch has only run one poor race and it came in a Grade 3 in June. A perfect 2 for 2 on this local grass, she has trained excellently for this and seems to be coming to the race right.

Kathleen Rose will try to steal this race. She has valid speed, was only beaten a neck in a Grade 2 in late June and has won 50% of her starts on grass.

Bound for Eden probably needs an easier group to shine. She has poor in both of her tries at Del Mar and although she ran into traffic last time, she only beat 2 to the wire.

Miss Ellany could be a bit fragile, as her races have been spaced. Best when sent along, with her style, she will get first run on the deep closers.

Wishing Gate is yet another contender in an absolute grab bag. A Grade 2 winner last year off the vacation, she has not raced since September when a wide 6th .

Gender Agenda is giving away winning experience to most in this race and that may come through loud and clear at crunch time.

Kitten’s Point was so highly thought of that she tried the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2012 and was beaten just a nose in a Grade 2 in Florida early in the year.

Floral Romance was life and death to end 2013 on a winning note and is 0 for 5 since while Oscar Party has been panned by the reviewers in her last 2 stakes attempts.

If either Dutchessa or Zilber draws in from the also-eligible list, they will be rank outsiders.

Kitten’s Point gets the nod basically off the company she has been keeping. The show horse in her last race won a Grade 2 at Anita next out. The place horse in last ran 2nd beaten a head in her next in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint on November 1. And the winner of last repeated November 1 in the BC Filly and Mare Turf with a 102 Beyer Speed Figure.
