Los Alamitos Futurity

About the Race and Track

The Los Alamitos Futurity will be run at the Orange County track for the first time after being carded as the Hollywood Futurity through 2006 and more recently the CashCall Futurity.

This Grade 1 event offers a $500,000 purse, as a short and sweet field will try to get to the line first in the mile and a sixteenth contest. A total of $300,000 is guaranteed to the winner, a pretty nice payday.

The track has playing toward speed so that should be high on the handicappers’ evaluations today.

A Longshot With Some Value: Firing Line

Firing Line cost nearly a quarter of a million dollars, moves to Rafael Bejarano today and if he can show the same kick routing as he did sprinting, he could throw a wrench into the works.

The Pick: Dortmund

Firing Line must prove it on dirt. He did run well in his sprint debut at Santa Anita but had to go to Del Mar to earn the sheepskin with an effective 87 Beyer Speed Figure. As far as getting the distance, this runner’s sire routing once and his dam won two routes. He has trained fast for this and just put up a best of 65 bullet work at Santa Anita.

No Problem popped and stopped in his debut but he has run just like his name suggests since, winning two in a row including the Grade 3 Bob Hope. He broke his maiden for a tag and has already repaid his $30,000 purchase price.

Bench Warrant made an official arrest on his 8 rivals in his debut when earning a 72 Beyer. He found winners much tougher when third but he broke poorly that day.

Dortmund is the one to beat and he will be tough. He has won his 2 starts by over a dozen lengths combined, the last with a clever 97 Beyer. The son of Big Brown has trained for Bob Baffert at Santa Anita of late and Baffert is seeking his 7th win in this event. The colt has trained sharply since his last win and the way he pulled away in that mile fray, couple with fact his sire won the Kentucky Derby, suggests this distance will be right up his alley.

Mr. Z will be making his second start in California. He was 5th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and in his last race he ran super when beaten a nose in the $1 million Delta Jackpot by Ocho Ocho Ocho. The colt was 4 lengths clear of the show horse that day.

The son of Malibu Moon has proven ability as shown when he ran 2nd at 17-1 in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland.

The racer got a nice work over the course last Sunday when he was clocked in 1:00 flat.

Here is the way it figures to unfold. No Problem will go for and make the lead. He has :45 and change speed to draw from but Dortmund will not allow him to get an easy lead and should be on his flank from the get go.

At the top of the lane Dortmund will use that signature stretch move to open up 3 lengths with sights on the wire.

Mr. Z will engage passing the 8th pole but figures to run out of real estate. These two look to dominate this field.
