Mother Goose Stakes Preview

About the Race and Track

The $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes this year will bring together some of the best 3-year-olds fillies in the land as they pit their skills going a mile and a sixteenth on dirt at Belmont on Saturday.

They will all try to have that fairy tale ending and follow in the footsteps the horse Mother Goose, who once beat males in the Belmont Futurity.

As one would expect, D. Wayne Lukas has won more Mother Goose Stakes than anybody. When the race was run at 9 furlongs, Rachel Alexandra set the speed stakes record of 1:46.33.

Legends like Dark Mirage, Shuvee, Ruffian, Life’s Magic, Go for Wand, Serena’s Song and Meadow Star have won this race and last year Close Hatches pulled off the feat.

She was coming off a second in the Grade 1 Acorn before coming from 3 lengths back to win by over 7 lengths while recording a career top 102 Beyer Speed Figure.

A Longshot With Some Value: House Rules

Trained by the venerable Allen Jerkens, who is known in some circles as the Giant Killer, House Rules can be excused for her last effort. If she reverts to her earlier form this year, she just may upset the apple cart.

The Pick: Untappable

House Rules also comes out of the Acorn but she didn’t fare all that well. She broke dead last and basically just passed tired horses. She only has a maiden win to her credit but she did run well in her Gulfstream finale when beaten a neck in the GP Oaks at 9-2.

Princess Violet flashed talent from Day One when she was beaten a neck in her debut at 42-1. She is two for two since and she has won at 3 different venues. The Beyer Speed Figures are going in the right direction and the place horse in her last win in a state-bred N1X spot was over 13 lengths clear of the show horse. She gets tested for class here.

America brings a little cuisine to the party as the renowned chef owns her Bobby Flay and the filly seems ambitiously placed. She only has one win and after chasing House Rules in the GP Oaks, she was a troubled fifth in the Black Eyed Susan.

Untappable has a super record and if you toss out her troubled effort in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, the form even brightens. She has worked like the proverbial Swiss clock for this event and is a clear standout in this race. No other entrant has even posted a triple digit Beyer and her last 3 figures, all wins this year, roll in at 100, 106 and 107.

Aqua Regia was pinballed around in her debut but the rest of the efforts have been solid. She recorded her second career win here earlier this month against entry-level allowance foes and will be making her stakes debut.

Stopchargingmaria has only run one poor race in her life and that was a comeback effort on a surface she may not have adored. The third off the layoff ploy worked to perfection last time when she got up in the final strides in the Black Eyed Susan with an ordinary 85 Beyer.
