The Mrs. Penny Stakes Preview

About the Race and Track

Nine fillies and mares will pit their skills Saturday at Parc Racing in the $100,000 mile and a sixteenth The Mrs. Penny on turf and handicappers will have some juicy options.

Parc Racing has been through some changes over the decades. Originally named Keystone Racetrack, Parc Racing was also called Philadelphia Park and it the track replaced Liberty Bell as the top track in the Philly area.

Liberty Bell brings back fond memories as the few times that I was there in person, success followed.

The thing that is attractive for horsemen about Parc Racing is that the purses are through the roof. Ten thousand starter runners run for a $25,000 purse, Maiden Special Weight performers race for $40,000 and entry-level allowance runners vie for $42,000.

Graham Motion , who has a pair in this year’s The Mrs. Penny, watched his student Ski Holiday win The Mrs. Penny in 2013.

A Longshot With Some Value: Lenape Rim

Lenape Rim is a stakes winner, she is stretching out and has won in that situation before and rates an upset look at about 5 or 6-1.

The Pick: Waterway Run

Harvest of Hope will break from the rail Saturday. She has never been a win machine, beat restricted claimers for both of her wins this year and will be a betting number.

Cat’s Holiday is one of Motion’s runners. This filly beat allowance runners in May and has run second in her last 2 outings. She has not raced since mid-July but is proven off the vacation and she has a nice turn of late foot.

Ferry Music draws a cozier slot here as she was out in post 11 in the 2013 edition of this race and could only manage a 6th. She is stakes placed this year and is coming off a win at Penn National.

Appealing Cat is the other Motion charge. This mare has been sidelined but she won off the bench back in the day and she has been Grade 3 placed in her career. Would expect this miss to be put into the race early and often.

Previous Honor has posted 3 of her 5 wins came on grass but she was handled in her last couple of stakes attempts. She was gaining ground late in her best turf route when beaten a half on a yielding course at Penn National in 2012.

Shekels has been beaten by $20,000 maiden claimers. She has a nice turn of late foot at times, but has never won a race and seems up against it here.

Waterway Run was overmatched in the Just a Game Stakes 2 back and that race came back live. The 8th finisher that day cashed next out in a restricted $95,000 stakes and the show horse on June 7 took the Grade 1 Diana next before a wide 5th in a Grade 1 in Chicago.

Lenape Rim has always had a penchant for finding the wire. The sprint last time may have sharpened her speed and note she did win on the stretch in June of last year.

Little Often Anni has been seen more often getting slices to the tune of 20 to the 6 wins. She only beat 5 in the last victory.

Looks Like Sis posted the rare win last time but this is a new caliber assignment.

Waterway Run had the excuse of a yielding course last time when the beaten chalk. She won a Group 3 back in the day in England, took a Grade 3 in May and is in the classy hands of trainer Chad Brown. That should be enough to put her over the top.
