Peter Pan Stakes Betting – Albano Picks Up The Win At Belmont Park

Posted by on 5/7/2014 7:05:15 PM

The week between the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes can be one where bettors take a minute to breathe. However, there is still high-stakes thoroughbred horse racing to bet on and this week’s big race is the Grade-2 Peter Pan Stakes, which will be held at Belmont Park on Saturday. This race carries a $200,000 purse and will be run on dirt at a distance of 1 1/8 miles.

Most of these horses couldn’t run with the Triple Crown crew, but they don’t have to worry about that on Saturday and a lot of these horses are just looking to show their handlers that they are capable of running in more stakes races throughout the year as we enter the busy summer season. Albano has the best resume in this field thus far, and he should be able to outlast the rest en route to the biggest win of his career.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, May 10th, post time TBA
Where: Belmont Park, Elmont, NY
Pick: Albano

All statuses as of Wednesday, May 7th

Albano (probable) will likely end up as the favorite for this race after finishing fourth in the Grade-2 Louisiana Derby, which followed second-place runs in the Grade-3 Lecomte and the Grade-2 Risen Star. He might be just on the outside of the Triple Crown horses, but a field like this shapes up nicely for this three-year-old, who could end up back at Belmont Park in the third jewel of the Triple Crown if he wins this and carries it throughout the summer.

Effinex (possible) finished eighth in the Grade-1 Wood Memorial, his graded-stakes debut, so this would be a good race for him to get back on track. Some horses get rushed and thrown into a race they have no business being in, and that is likely what happened with Effinex at the Wood. This is a much better race for him.

Fabulous Kid (probable) broke his maiden on his first try, then came in third in the non-graded Northern Spur, so this will be his first major test to see what this colt has as we head into the summer portion of the 2014 horse-racing schedule.

Irish You Well (possible) ran third in the Grade-3 Illinois Derby, but he has attempted to break his maiden six times and hasn’t done it yet, finishing anywhere from second to fifth. How much stock can you put into a colt like that? We’ll see on Saturday.

Matterhorn (probable) broke his maiden on the first try, then finished 10th in an allowance race. He did improve to third in his next allowance race, but a Grade-2 race may be too much for him. But you do eventually have to put a horse out there against a good field and Matterhorn should get his chance to prove the doubters wrong this weekend.

Mexikoma (probable) needed two tries to break his maiden, then he finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He has run just one race in 2014, finishing third in an allowance race, so the Peter Pan will be a huge step for Mexikoma. Will it be forwards or back?

Our Caravan (probable) gets another crack at graded-stakes races after an eighth in the Grade-2 Holy Bull and then seventh in the Grade-2 Fountain Of Youth. He did win the non-graded Calder Derby, so maybe that helped with confidence, but Our Caravan will need to bring his A-game to compete on Saturday.

Tapicero (probable) needed four attempts to break his maiden, then he won a claiming race, but he actually started his career with a second-place run in the non-graded Excellent Luck Stakes as a two-year-old. He might need some of that excellent luck on Saturday because we really don’t know what to expect from this colt.

Tonalist (possible) is another horse making his graded-stakes debut after breaking his maiden on his second try, then he finished second in an allowance race, just ahead of Mexikoma. There are more than a few horses in this prospective field that will be looking to see how they match up with the non-Triple Crown horses, and Tonalist is one of them.

How It Will Play Out

Just based on what we have seen, you would have to say that Albano is the most accomplished horse in the prospective field and even though anything can happen in horse racing, he is the safest pick to make on Saturday in New York.
