Preakness Stakes Betting – California Chrome Lives Up To The Hype At Pimlico

Posted by on 5/14/2014 10:00:36 PM

The second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, goes off this weekend at Pimlico in Baltimore. This race is the shortest of the Triple Crown events, coming in at 1 3/16 miles, and it is run on dirt. The purse is set at $1.5 million, but one horse will be going for a prize much larger than that.

It has been a while since we’ve seen a horse dominate the Kentucky Derby like California Chrome, and he’ll show it was no fluke by romping to the win at Pimlico and ramping up the Triple Crown talk.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, May 17th, post time 6:19 PM ET
Where: Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore, MD
Pick: California Chrome

All horses listed as probable as of Wednesday, May 14th

Bayern finished second in the Grade-3 Derby Trial, and this was a solid result as he had just two weeks’ rest after finishing third in the Grade-1 Arkansas Derby. He can bounce back on short rest, but that extra time by not going in the Kentucky Derby could benefit the colt.

California Chrome has been absolutely crushing the competition, and his win in the Kentucky Derby was his fifth in a row, including three straight in Grade-1 or Grade-2 races. He’ll be the heavy favorite in going for the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and it’ll take a horse’s very best effort to stop him from doing so.

Dynamic Impact needed five tries to break his maiden, then won the Grade-3 Illinois Derby in his next start. That is a nice story, but he’ll need much more in order to even crack the top three. This will be by far the best field he has ever run against.

General A.Rod finished 11th in the Kentucky Derby, which garners a start at Pimlico as he wasn’t that far off from the top half of the results. He challenged for the win in his two previous graded-stakes races, but he’ll need an extra gear to catch the likes of California Chrome on Saturday.

If Kid Cruz makes the start at Pimlico, it will be his graded-stakes debut and that is a lot to ask of a horse. He has won the Private Terms and the Federico Tesio, but those were both non-graded events. Graded stakes are a different sort of race and then when you talk about Triple Crown events, that takes it to a new level.

Pablo Del Monte came in third in the Grade-1 Blue Grass, and since winning allowance and maiden events in his first two starts, he hasn’t finished higher than third. It would be a major surprise if he even finished in the top three at Pimlico, and not to mention, he ran his last race (his first in two months) on a synthetic surface.

Ria Antonia will attempt to become the sixth filly in the storied history of the Preakness to win this race, and the first since Rachel Alexandra in 2009. However, it has been a struggle since she won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, finishing third in the Grade-3 Rachel Alexandra, second in the Grade-1 Santa Anita and then sixth in the Grade-1 Kentucky Oaks. Those aren’t the type of results that usually encourage confidence in a horse, and even though it would be a fantastic story, it would be a lot to ask of Ria Antonia.

Ride On Curlin’ should feel good about his seventh-place result in the Kentucky Derby as he was dead last coming into the stretch, so we know he can make up time in a hurry. However, the Preakness is the shortest of the Triple Crown races, so he might not want to wait too long or get too far behind the field.

Ring Weekend won the Grade-2 Tampa Bay Derby, then finished second in the Calder Derby, a non-graded event, so no one knows quite what to make of this gelding. A good result on Saturday should put him on track for bigger things throughout the season.

Social Inclusion won allowance and maiden races in his first two starts, then finished a respectable third in the Grade-1 Wood Memorial. It wasn’t enough to get him into the Kentucky Derby, but this could be a horse to watch on Saturday to get into the top three.

How It Will Play Out

With the ease in which he won the Kentucky Derby, taking his foot off the gas down the stretch, it is hard to imagine any horse beating California Chrome this weekend in Baltimore.

Preakness Stakes Betting Pick: California Chrome
