QE II Challenge Cup Betting – Sea Queen Heads Towards The Breeders’ Cup

Posted by on 10/9/2014 11:28:10 PM

The Grade-1 QE II Challenge Cup is a crucial prep race for fillies looking to run at the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare in November. It is specifically for three-year-olds, and it is 1 1/8 miles over a turf surface. It also features a purse of $500,000.

This field is one of the most balanced we have seen this year, but Sea Queen has been too consistent to overlook and will likely go to the Breeders’ Cup with a victory on Saturday at Keeneland.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, October 11th, post time 5:13 PM ET

Where: Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, KY

Pick: Sea Queen

Aurelia’s Belle had won two Grade-3 races in a row before coming in fifth at the Grade-3 Pucker Up Stakes, and this will be an interesting race for this filly as she has performed well in Grade-2 and Grade-3 races, but she finished ninth at the Grade-1 Kentucky Oaks (although that was on dirt). Can she run with the elite three-year-old fillies in this class on a turf surface? We will see on Saturday.

Ball Dancing was bred in Kentucky, yet ran her first four races in France to inconsistent results. But she won her American debut at the Grade-2 Sands Point Stakes last month, so it is tough to handicap this filly’s chances. She has the speed, but can Ball Dancing replicate her fantastic performance from Belmont Park? This will be an intriguing option in your racebook.

Crown Queen needed three tries to break her maiden, then won an allowance race and followed that with a victory at the Grade-2 Lake Placid in August. This will be a huge test for this filly, which has been brought along rather slowly, but she is being pointed towards the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf race in November and a win on Saturday would be an encouraging sign for her handlers and fans.

Daring Dancer is coming off a disappointing sixth at the Sands Point after winning four of her first five starts, including the Grade-2 Lake George in July. She also has a fifth-place run from the non-graded Wonder Again under her saddle, so Daring Dancer has to show more consistency before players can really get behind her, especially in big races like the QE II Challenge Cup.

Minorette ran fourth at the Lake Placid, her first start since winning the Grade-1 Belmont Oaks. She is another filly that is being pointed towards the Breeders’ Cup, but she would need a big performance this weekend to show players that the win at Belmont Park was no fluke. She will need to get off to a good start in this 1 1/8 mile race as the Belmont Oaks were 1 ¼ miles, so we know she can run over distance.

Personal Diary pulled off a minor upset by winning the Grade-1 Del Mar Oaks in August after finishing seventh in her first Grade-1 race, the Alcibiades, last year. That race was on a synthetic surface, but then she failed to win four allowance races in a row. Then she finishes second at the Grade-3 Regret and wins at Del Mar. Which version of this filly will we see at Keeneland?

Sea Queen win the Wonder again, then finished second at the Belmont Oaks, fourth at the Del Mar Oaks and third at the Sands Point. She always seems to be around the front of the pack, which is always a good thing because that gives her a chance to win, but See Queen needs to find that extra gear to come away with the win on Saturday. That being said, she does have a good chance and might be considered the favorite here.

Sistas Stroll has won three starts in a row, but one was in her second attempt at breaking her maiden, then an allowance race, then the Grade-3 Pucker Up in August. She has been brought along slowly and might be in over her head on Saturday, but Sistas Stroll could be a darkhorse worth looking at.

Speed Seeker rounds out the field and she doesn’t have much experience, breaking her maiden at Woodbine in June, then she finished fifth at the Lake George. This filly might not be able to stack up with this field, but Speed Seeker could make a run in some smaller races this fall.

How It Will Play Out

Sea Queen’s consistency will pay off with a massive win at Keeneland on Saturday.
